My cat has red sores and spots. Is it her food or something else?

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is just no way to diagnose this just based on a description. This may be due to allergies for example. This could also be some sort of infection perhaps. This requires further diagnostics which would be done based on an exam. Your veterinarian would be better able to proceed with the needed diagnostics to try to determine what may be wrong. I would highly recommend you have him reevaluated by his veterinarian since things have worsened again. They may be able to proceed with further diagnostics and treatments accordingly. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for your post! Unfortuneately, there are no pictures attached. It is hard to say exactly what the red spot on Artemis's back may be without examining Artemis first, but I can offer some insights. It could be a fungal infection, a cyst or small tumor, flea allergy, or other environmental allergy, Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with an exam and a few simple skin tests. Your cat could have allergies, to fleas, substances in the environment, and most often, to foods. I recommend getting your cat seen by your vet for an exam and treatment and consider doing a food trial. There are commercial foods that have a single protein source. Try feeding your cat a food that contains a protein that he has never been exposed to, such as duck or venison. If his skin improves then he likely has an allergy to the protein in his old food.

I recommend to have her examined. This spots may not be related to the diet and they could actually be something like ringworm which can spread to humans. if the lesions become a chronic issue, your best option to rule out food allergy is to feed a hydrolyzed protein diet and conduct a proper food trial. Hello, sorry to hear about Woezel. That looks like it could be associated with contact allergies especially if he likes to rub his face on certain things around the house. Common causes to cause contact allergies in cats could be associated with plastic food bowls and carpets. In addition to the allergies, they can also develop secondary local bacterial and yeast infections. Finally, it is important to rule out other causes such as mites and ring worm but that seems less likely in Woezel. You can wipe the area with skin sensitive baby wipes for the next 3-5 days and see if it resolves. If it does not, or if it gets worse, then Woezel should be evaluated by his veterinarian sooner.
