Can my cat get scabies from my dog? Does Nexgard treat it effectively?

Although dogs do get scabies, the species of skin mite that causes canine scabies is different from the one that causes human scabies. The mites are species-specific, so it's quite rare to see transmission from humans to dogs (or vice-versa) beyond a mild localized rash. But to be safe, I would suggest using a flea preventative such as Revolution or Advantage Multi on your dog that is effective against skin mites - this should ensure that you don't need to worry :)

Mites are species specific. This means human scabies mites cannot survive for long or breed on dogs. They may cross back and forth between you and your dog though. He may develop a rash from the mites. If he itches or chews, he could make it worse. Have him examined by your veterinarian to make sure Tripper doesn't need antibiotic treatment or medication to stop the itching.

Hi and thanks for you question. Nexgard is indicated for the treatment and prevention of fleas and 4 major types of ticks, but not bed bugs. Sorry you are having an issue with bed bugs- they have been making a come back lately! You may want to call your local pest control and they will be able to help you get rid of them. Great question! Nexgard kills the deer tick as well as fleas and American dog tick/rocky mountain tick, and lone star tick. It is an oral pill as well, so I would us that for your dogs. Because Nexgard doesn't protect again heartworms, you will have to give your dogs Heartgard as well, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Advantix is a spot on treatment that treats the same things as Nexgard, but you would also have to use Heartgard as well for the heartworms. These two medications (Nexgard and Advantix) are for dogs only. As for the cats, Simparica prevents five types of ticks, so this may work for your cats :-)

Prescription monthly Nexgard flea and tick preventative also kills mange and is approved for a 4 month old dog (monthly Simparica and Bravecto every 12 weeks also work off label to kill mange but are labeled for dogs 6 months and older). She can be just on monthly Nexgard without the ivermectin therapy but both are safe as well. I recommend inquiring with your vet about monthly Nexgard for Winter and seeing if she may have underlying allergies as well which can predispose dogs to getting mange. Prescription Apoquel pills or monthly Cytopoint allergy injections Injections are both very effective in treating itchiness from environmental allergies (typically characterized by paw licking, scratching, chronic anal gland issues, chronic ear infections). Bravecto is not specifically labeled for treatment of the scabies mite or for use in rabbits, however it is an effective treatment. Any use on rabbits would be considered "off label usage" and should be discussed with a veterinarian who has examined your rabbit before treating it. Another option to be discussed with your veterinarian would be Revolution topical (selamectin).

Hi there! Scabies is generally fairly easy to treat. Your veterinarian should prescribe a medication such as Bravecto or ivermectin, which will clear it up without any problems. I'm not aware of any over-the-counter remedies that are effective, so this is best left to your veterinarian to treat :)
