Will Nexgard flea & tick medicine protect my dog from bed bugs?

Even though fleas and ticks need to bite a pet in order for Nexgard to work, it kills the parasites quickly enough to prevent them from causing either flea infestations or from transmitting different tick-borne diseases. However, no product is 100% effective. I think you're being very proactive in looking for repellant options to protect Milo on your upcoming camping trip! Topical products like K9 Advantix II (available over the counter) or Vectra 3D (prescription-based), or Seresto collars (available over the counter) are all labeled to repel new ticks and Advantix II also repels mosquitoes. To my knowledge, no products actually repel fleas. Don't worry - they all kill fleas quickly, so an infestation isn't a concern. I often recommend using any one of these products in conjunction with Nexgard if a high-risk situation is needed. However, since I don't know Milo's medical history, I strongly recommend first calling his vet to confirm that it's safe for him to use one of these products. NexGard does not prevent heartworms but does prevent fleas and ticks. I use it on my own dogs and have been very happy with the product. Advantix or Frontline are also good products so you should use whatever you prefer.

Great question! Nexgard kills the deer tick as well as fleas and American dog tick/rocky mountain tick, and lone star tick. It is an oral pill as well, so I would us that for your dogs. Because Nexgard doesn't protect again heartworms, you will have to give your dogs Heartgard as well, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Advantix is a spot on treatment that treats the same things as Nexgard, but you would also have to use Heartgard as well for the heartworms. These two medications (Nexgard and Advantix) are for dogs only. As for the cats, Simparica prevents five types of ticks, so this may work for your cats :-)

I'm sorry to hear that you've had to deal with tapeworms twice - that sounds quite frustrating! Like most flea preventives, with Nexgard, fleas must first bite a dog before the medication works to kill them. It's possible that your dogs are getting infected if they eat either live or dead fleas that have been infected with tapeworms, either before or after the Nexgard has killed them. The other thing to consider with tapeworms is that most require at least two doses of deworming medication about 3 weeks apart in order to effectively treat the infection. While I don't know how close together your two tapeworm infections were, another possibility to consider is that the first infection might not have been fully treated. I find Nexgard to be one of the most effective flea and tick preventives on the market. I would consider asking your vet about intermittently deworming Leo and his buddy since tapeworms seem to be a recurrent issue. I hope this helps and that everything goes well!

They have to feed off blood to produce eggs, so I wouldn't worry about that or an infestation. It sounds as though you have done a good job. I would just add that you should consider a long lasting tick preventative. Dips and sprays do not last long on the dog. I would consider one of the new oral medications: either Nexgard or Simparica which are monthly or Bravecto which is one pill every 3 months. i wish you and Lilly the best!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not 100% sure what you mean by an Advantix flea bath. Advantix is a topical flea treatment applied on the skin of dogs. Yes you can use Nexgard along with Advantix. Great multimodal flea/tick strategy. After you have used both oral and topical treatments together for 3 months or so, any environmental problem inside the home should be addressed. That gives enough time for most if not all of the immature stages to mature and be killed by the products. After that time period, you may be able to drop back down to one product each month. Depends on your geographical location and your particular flea problem. Good luck

The manufacturers of flea and tick products do not recommend using more than one product at the time, as there could be an increased risk of side effects. Seresto is a very good product, it will be worth to give it a go but you should wait about 4 weeks after Luna had NexGard tablet.
