I have scabies. My dog is losing hair. Can he catch it from me?

Although dogs do get scabies, the species of skin mite that causes canine scabies is different from the one that causes human scabies. The mites are species-specific, so it's quite rare to see transmission from humans to dogs (or vice-versa) beyond a mild localized rash. But to be safe, I would suggest using a flea preventative such as Revolution or Advantage Multi on your dog that is effective against skin mites - this should ensure that you don't need to worry :)

Sarcoptic mange can actually cross species, but should not last long on humans. They may make you feel itchy for a little while, but will go away within 24 hours. I've had a great amount of exposure to dogs with sarcoptes and have had the transient itchiness on my arms too. It has never lasted more than a couple of hours on me. In the meantime, rinse your arms with some cool water and soap. Wash your sheets and consider not having close contact with your dog until the infestation is under control. If you are itching for more than 24 hours and have red spots on your arms, then you should consult your physician.

The scabies mite is species specific. The dog scabies mite may spread to your cat (or you), but it won't be able to complete its lifecycle and would die in several days. Nexgard is listed as treatment for scabies mites.

Ginger needs to be seen by a veterinarian for a diagnosis on what's going on with her skin, but if she is very itchy and if you have a rash that's similar to hers, I'd definitely recommend you both get that checked right away (you by your doctor, of course :-) ). There is a skin mite called sarcoptes that can infect a dog's skin and cause intense itching, and this mite can also be spread to people. Thankfully, if that's the case, it's easy to treat - but does require a prescription medication from the veterinarian. So, definitely have her checked as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

They get scabies generally from other dogs. He is probably allergic to something in the yard. I recommend bathing him with a hypoallergenic shampoo, and you can give Benadryl to reduce the allergic reaction. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. If the skin isn’t improving in a few days I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. They may prescribe medication to reduce the rash and itching, and if the skin looks infected oral antibiotics. I would keep him out of the yard until this resolves. There are itchy skin conditions which can be transferred from pets to people - scabies, ringworm and occasionally flea bites can all cause itching in people. I recommend you get Goldie fully checked by your vet and skin scrapings/hair tests performed to rule these out - depending on the findings you may also need to see your own doctor or pharmacist for treatment also. Generally speaking however, recurrent seasonal itching is much more likely to be related to allergies and requires symptomatic treatment for Goldie - these are not contagious to people

Hi there! Scabies is generally fairly easy to treat. Your veterinarian should prescribe a medication such as Bravecto or ivermectin, which will clear it up without any problems. I'm not aware of any over-the-counter remedies that are effective, so this is best left to your veterinarian to treat :)
