Why does my cat get recurring painful pus-filled skin infections?

Pepper may be suffering from allergic skin where her skin will overreact to something such as grass, fleas or dust etc, then swelling and infection can develop. This tends to effect the skin in large areas rather than in smaller clumps. If it is random well defined areas that are breaking out I suspect she may have eosinophilic granuloma complex, which is a condition in cats where essentially the skin damages itself. It causes nasty red wet lesions and sometimes ulcers and lumps. I think either way Pepper needs treatment so will need to see the vet. They will likely give an antibiotic injection to tackle any infection. The key of treatment will be managing the immune system which will likely be done with steroids.

These sound like wounds from being in a bad fight with another cat. It’s best to have these treated by your veterinarian if you can. In the meantime clean each wound with hydrogen peroxide and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. I’m concerned about the ones around his anus. There may be a tear in the rectum that may be very serious and need a veterinary exam to determine if the feces are coming out the wound. If so this could cause more infection and may need to be stitched closed. Antibiotics will help these wounds heal more quickly also. It looks like this may not be a simple infection. You should talk to your vet about a possible immune-mediated disease or a biopsy for a resistant infection or fungal infection. The vet may need to check his blood work and test for FIV/FeLV to see if there are any abnormalities which could affect healing.

Oh my. This is a pretty severe case of alopecia, with redness, and likely infection if you are seeing pus. I would highly recommend having your pets skin cultured to determine what antibiotic is going to get rid of this infection. I would also recommend having your vet test Mylo for demodex mites to make sure we are not missing anything here. These tests should get us on the right track towards an appropriate treatment for Mylo moving forward. If Mylo is very itchy, then we have to consider an underlying allergy as the cause for this as well, and start him on allergy medication (Apoquel or Cytopoint) right away. Poor Vinnie. This looks like possible bite wounds with a bacterial infection or a fungal infection or even a parasite (less likely). Since they keep trying to heal and reoccurring, I would have your vet take a look. Your vet will be able to properly clean them and see what type of medicine he needs to be on. This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
