Why does my cat's paw infection keep coming back after vet visits?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My cats foot keeps getting infected and open and dry. It’s happened about 4 times and each time we take him to the vet and get him meds but a few days later it’s back to being bad. We tried a cone also, he licks it with his very rough tongue. What do we do?

It looks like this may not be a simple infection. You should talk to your vet about a possible immune-mediated disease or a biopsy for a resistant infection or fungal infection. The vet may need to check his blood work and test for FIV/FeLV to see if there are any abnormalities which could affect healing.
