My cat has painful, recurring skin wounds leaking fluid. Why?

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 13 days old | 2 lbs

My cat, Moldy, has been in pain recently due to holes that keep forming on his skin. I have treated him for it and some holes healed, but they keep coming back. There are/were two on his back, one on his lower back, and two around his butt. The ones around his butt are leaking a brown fluid that smells like feces. I do not know exactly what is going on. Do you think you can help?

These sound like wounds from being in a bad fight with another cat. It’s best to have these treated by your veterinarian if you can. In the meantime clean each wound with hydrogen peroxide and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. I’m concerned about the ones around his anus. There may be a tear in the rectum that may be very serious and need a veterinary exam to determine if the feces are coming out the wound. If so this could cause more infection and may need to be stitched closed. Antibiotics will help these wounds heal more quickly also. Hello. If you have or can purchase a skin antiseptic, one with either 2% chlorhexidine or 1% povidine iodine, then you can gently clean this 2 times daily. Antibiotics would hasten healing, & if the wound is not looking better by early next week, I would consider a veterinary visit. But by keeping this clean, it will heal, & yes, this has the look of a typical cat bite abscess, so he did get into an argument with another cat. My cat's fight wound isn't healing, has discharge, and he licks it.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! Is the wound right by his penis? If so that is a very hard location to bandage without covering his penis. The skin around the wound is very swollen and red. i am concerned about an abscess or a warble/cuterebra, which is a fly larvae under the skin. I recommend that you take him to the Vet Monday to have the area evaluated and to start antibiotics. Otherwise he needs an E-collar or cone to prevent licking. Good luck!

Why is my cat's neck wound getting worse after clearing up?

Judging from the picture, this could be a ruptured abscess or secondary to self trauma from him scratching at the area. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. He will need the hair clipped from around the wound and the wound cleaned. Why does my outdoor cat have pus wounds, bald spots, and abscesses?

Poor Church! It sounds like he is developing abscesses from some sort of trauma. We see this most commonly from cat bite or fight wounds. Usually these wounds heal best when treated by a veterinarian. We generally clean and flush out the purulent material and then start an antibiotic for 7-10 days. One concern I have remind cat owners about fight wounds in cats is that this is how feline leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses are spread from one cat to the next. I recommend testing your kitty and then trying to work on ways to keep Church indoors and less likely to be injured.

Why is my cat losing hair around a healing tail wound with new spots?

The other spot was probably there at the same time but due to the fur covering the small puncture wound you did not see it. These wounds became infected and now that they are open the infection will drain out and they will heal. These are commonly due to cat bites or scratches. I clean them with peroxide and keep the scab off so the discharge can drain. If they are in an area the cat can’t lick I use a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. Why does my cat have an open, infected skin wound? Fleas or mites?

This is an open and infected skin wound. It may be the result of trauma (cat fight) or self inflicted from scratching ( fleas or ear mites). A hands on exam by a veterinarian can help you to determine the cause and also prescribe an antibiotic and assess the wound. What to do for a cat wound leaking pus & blood for 2 weeks, no vet?

Hello. First, stop squeezing the wound. Every time you do, you reopen & possibly re-contaminate the lesion. Pick up some Hibiclens ( chlorhexidine antibacterial skin cleanser ) at any pharmacy & gently scrub the area twice a day. It will take time, but eventually this should heal..
