My kitten was just neutered. What if he's in pain without meds?

Unfortunately, there is very little you can do in terms of pain management for a cat at home, as far over the counter medications. They are all dangerous and ineffective. A cat neuter is a typically very simple, quick, and free of complications. So, if he is experiencing this type of reaction now post-operatively, I would be concerned and get him back to whoever performed the procedure. If you take him to an emergency clinic now, they'll be able to do the same and get him medications that will help calm him down, and hopefully make him feel better. The one thing you can try to do if he'll allow it is, if the area where he was operated looks swollen, you can try icing it. Hope this makes sense.

You can ask your vet for pain medications for Powder, and give them as directed. I personally have not run across a cat that has associated hands with a traumatic event, and do not believe it is common at all. The cats I have neutered, including my own, don't remember the procedure. Keep him quiet, give him pain medications, and keep him warm. I hope this helps!

Hello. Most cats do very well after surgery, so as long as Haiku does not get too active tearing through the house, he can pretty much do his usual routine. There are no special requirements to aid in his healing other than to check the area for anything that looks unusual. He can clean the surgical area & will not harm anything. I would continue his pain medications at least for a day or so to make sure he has a normal recovery. If anything does concern you, contact your veterinarian immediately. It sounds like he is still experiencing some pain. Talk to the vet who did the neuter about prescribing an anti-inflammatory/pain medication to help relieve the pain and make him more comfortable. Do not give any human pain medications as they can be toxic to cats.

Depends on the anesthetic used, it can take up to 72 hours for a pet to completely recover. Most pets will recover within 24 hours. The e-collar (cone) is necessary to prevent licking of the incision. Don't worry though, Chandler will acclimate. You may be able to remove it for short periods to allow him to eat or drink, but you must watch him carefully to prevent licking. The injection should cover the worst of the post operative discomfort. If not, you can request more from your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, meowing excessively, drooling or panting. These may indicate discomfort.

Keep an eye on Kovu, three days of pain medication may be enough for him. If he does appear painful tomorrow, give the vet a call so he can some more pain mediation. Neutering can help stop spraying, but only time will tell if he stops completely. I hope this helps!

Papoose will be in pain from the surgery, but hopefully the pain medication the vet gave him is helping. I'm not surprised he's not laying on his stomach, it will be tender from the surgery. Keep an eye on him tonight, and if he is still this way in the morning, give his vet a call.
