My cat was poisoned and isn't pooping. Is this normal during recovery?

Hi there. After an episode of diarrhea, it's common for a cat to not poop for a day or two, since it takes time for the intestine to fill up again with solid stool. So if she's acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking, not vomiting, active, etc.), I wouldn't be concerned - she'll poop when she's ready :)

Once her appetite is back to normal, she should have a bowel movement within a day or two. Encourage her to drink plenty of water as this will soften the stool. It is very common for a cat to not have any bowel movement for a couple of days after having diarrhea because it takes time for stool to build up again in the colon after an episode of diarrhea. I would be concerned if she is straining to defecate without producing any stool, vomiting or not eating. If everything seems normal other than the lack of stool production, then I would just give it a little more time. My guess is that she will pass some stool tonight or tomorrow. If they are acting normal and eating fine then it may just be from the 12 hour fast and loose stools. You could monitor for another day and see if they go. If not or they start straining to defecate and/or vomit then they should be examined by your vet for treatment.

Often when there is foreign material in the GI tract motility will slow down so I would not be surprised that she has not passed more stool. The blood is likely due to irritation of the colon wall from the foil. I don't know what medication you are giving her so I am unsure what to tell you about how long it will take for her to produce any stool. If she is eating and drinking and acting normally I would not be overly concerned at this stage. Just keep in contact with your veterinarian as to how she is doing and if you and/or your veterinarian are concerned then take her back in for a follow-up exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Please, take him to your local vets today, as it sounds that he is struggling a lot. There are no remedies that you can give him at home, so the sooner you take him to your local vets the better for your cat.

Plus she was probably not eating well before surgery due to being ill and most patients are fasted for a bit after surgery. This means there is likely less food in her system to come out. Unless she is straining to defecate, it is typically not worrisome that she is not defecating regularly yet. As far as the drinking, she most likely received IV fluids under anesthesia and while hospitalized. This would have provided her with a large amount of fluids. Now eating the canned food, this is supplying her with moisture as well. As long as she is eating and is acting normally, then I suspect her recovery is going well. If you have any concerns though, I would seek emergency care this weekend just to be sure. I hope this information helps!
