My cat is peeing a lot after dry food. Is this normal? What tests?

It's theoretically possible that the stress of switching foods could cause this if he has a condition called Idiopathic Cystitis. But that's quite the stretch if he's never had any urinary problems before at his age. I'd put my money on this being unrelated and take him in for a check up and urinalysis and x-rays of his bladder. I hope he's feeling better soon!

Increased thirst and urination can be commom symptoms of many disease processes and you are right that the first things we check for are metabolic (kidney disease, diabetes, etc.). The answer to your question is both. A urinalysis should always be performed as part of a blood panel, otherwise you are missing crucial information. Your vet will likely order a senior kitty wellness panel from an outside lab which will include cbc, chemistry panel, thyroid testing, and urinalysis. It is fairly rare, but ask your veterinarian if your kitty may be suffering from Cushing's disease or liver disease. Also sometimes cats can still be hyperthyroid, even though the thyroid parameters are within normal limits (this is called euthyroid sick). He could also have a tumor. In any case, this needs to be investigated further.

The best way to distinguish between these problems is urine analysis. You should try and catch urine sample (you can remove the litter from the tray or put just shredded newspaper instead of the litter) and collect urine sample once Batta urinates. Alternatively, your local vet should be able to collect the sample at the clinic. Stress-induced cystitis can be triggered by changing the diet, so it is possible that frequent urination in Batta is due to stress. Changing the diet back to the previous one should solve the problem, if that is the case.

It is concerning that he is drinking and urinating excessively. Since he is so young, I am concerned he has a congential kidney disorder causing kidney failure. He should have an ultrasound of his kidneys to look for abnormalities. Call your vet and give him/her an update to let your vet know he is drinking and urinating excessively.

I am assuming she is favoring wet food because it has more water in it and she is having a medical problem causing her dehydration. this could be caused by diabetes for example, but there could be other causes to that such as a chronic urinary condition. she needs to get to the vet as diagnosis in her condition is the key, she will need a blood test, i believe it should revile the problem.

I would say that that would not be typical. It sounds like quite a bit of ruination. Have you noticed if he’s drinking more water? If he’s drinking more water and urinating more that could be an indication of an underlying problem like diabetes. He should really see your vet for an exam and some blood/urine testing.
