My cat is peeing a lot but seems healthy. Is it the new food?

It's theoretically possible that the stress of switching foods could cause this if he has a condition called Idiopathic Cystitis. But that's quite the stretch if he's never had any urinary problems before at his age. I'd put my money on this being unrelated and take him in for a check up and urinalysis and x-rays of his bladder. I hope he's feeling better soon!

The only way to definitively determine if the food is responsible is to switch him, gradually, back to his old diet and see if his litterbox habits return to normal. If so, you have the option of keeping him on his old food, just feed less of it and increase his activity to facilitate weight loss. Survey the area around the home for any negative stimuli that may be causing stress. This may include recent changes in the home (furniture rearranged, new flooring, etc.), high traffic, loud noises or even feral cats outdoors that he can see through a window. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, may help decrease any stress or anxiety. Additional litterboxes may also be of benefit. Use an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle, to thoroughly clean soiled areas. If the behavior persists or worsens (bloody urine, straining to urinate, change in thirst/urination), then Azazel should be physically examining by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical causes.

He may not be marking his territory, he may have a medical illness like feline idiopathic cystitis (stress can be a factor in that, and since you have had a change in schedule, that could be stress for him) or bladder stones. He will need to see a vet for this problem. If he appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until tomorrow morning. If he appears lethargic, ill or distressed, he is straining to go but can't, he yeowls when peeing, or if the urine appears very bloody, then he should be seen by a vet ASAP. Feed him wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure he drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder. I hope this helps!

If he is also drinking a lot then it is definitely not normal. i would recommend starting with a urine analysis, then if some abnormalities are found you might need to carry on to a blood test or ultrasound.

Other worrisome signs are weight loss, vomiting and changes in activity level. Urinary tract infections are rare in male cats, but will typically result in smaller than normal urine spots in the box. Straining or crying in the box are other reasons to see a veterinarian. If he cannot produce any urine at all, that would be a true emergency. It sounds like he does not have any of these symptoms. I suspect that he is getting the majority of his fluid from his diet. I hope this information helps!

It is usually related to bacterial infection of the bladder but it may be due to bladder crystals or stress. Please, take her to your local vets for an appointment, as most likely she will need a course of antibiotics to get better.

Hello, thank you for your question about Atticus. The symptoms that you are describing could be indicative of two possibilities - constipation or urinary obstruction. Urinary obstruction is much more common in male cats due to their anatomy; however, if Atticus had an underlying condition such as bladder stones, she could experience an obstruction. Constipation is a not uncommon condition in cats. It can have many different underlying causes. Since Atticus is otherwise acting normally I would recommend continuing to monitor her for the next 12-24 hours. If she continues to go in/out of the box and does not produce any urine/feces or she develops any other symptoms (lethargy, vomiting, inappetance) I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian.
