My cat is in pain. Is it safe to give her Meloxicam or carprofen?

Meloxicam can be used in cats but with caution. Giving the wrong dose of meloxicam can be very dangerous for cats. The low dose (0.5 mg/ml) formula can be dosed with the provided syringe. In the cat this product is given either as a single one time injection in association with surgery (its FDA approved use) or long term 2-3 times per week (its non-U.S. dose). Long term use of this product in cats is "off label" in the U.S. In my opinion, there is a specific NSAID made for cats called Onsior that would be safer to give.

Meloxicam (eloxioral) can be given to cats as a single dose but prolonged used is not recommended. It is best to contact your vet if you have questions about the medications but personally, I would not use it in cats unless it was my only option since there are much better cat specific medications to use like Onsior.

Unfortunately this is a very large dose for his size. Also, if he has kidney problems he could be even more sensitive than normal cats. I would have your vet or your local emergency take a look at him. They may want to check his bloodwork to ensure his kidney values look okay and also make sure he is able to pass irons. No, I am afraid all of these have severe risks of toxicity for dogs and cats which is why we have specifically developed medications for dogs, such as carprofen or meloxicam, or deracoxib or similar. NSAIDs for humans can cause liver and kidney damage in dogs. Please consult your veterinarian for antiinflammatories for your dog.. There are also cheaper generic formulations than then usual name brand.

Ibuprofen is toxic to cats and should NOT be used at all. Another anti-inflammatory medication as Meloxicam should be ideally used. Antibiotics may be added as well. I would strongly recommend to discuss this treatment with your vet again.
