Can I give my cat dog Metacam? Is it safe and how do I adjust the dose?

Those drugs (NSAIDS) are not really recommended for cats. If you do give it, I suggest it only be ONE dose. You are better off getting an NSAID made for cats from your vet called Onsior. Cats are extremely sensitive to these medications. You need to tell us what dose of these drugs you have an if they are pills or liquid, otherwise we can't help you. Meloxicam (eloxioral) can be given to cats as a single dose but prolonged used is not recommended. It is best to contact your vet if you have questions about the medications but personally, I would not use it in cats unless it was my only option since there are much better cat specific medications to use like Onsior.

Yes, these two medications can be used together without any problems. I would caution you, however, that Metacam needs to be used very carefully in older cats because it isn't safe for cats with any degree of chronic kidney disease - this is extremely common in older cats, so I'm always very cautious about using it unless there has been recent blood work showing that everything is fine. If it was prescribed recently by your vet, then go ahead and use it - but if not, I would definitely recommend talking with them first to make sure they feel that it's safe for your kitty.

Unfortunately this is a very large dose for his size. Also, if he has kidney problems he could be even more sensitive than normal cats. I would have your vet or your local emergency take a look at him. They may want to check his bloodwork to ensure his kidney values look okay and also make sure he is able to pass irons. Hello, Lola is indeed at higher risk for adverse reactions even after a single dose of meloxicam, however your veterinarian is likely not too concerned with the severity of her kidney disease. Therefore, the side effects of meloxicam to her kidneys would be dependent on how severe her kidney disease is. I would recommend monitoring her kidney values for the next five days as Meloxicam has a long half-life and can take up to 5 days to remove completely from the body. This could be done with daily blood checks. Also know that of all the NSAIDs, Meloxicam has the widest safety margin in the phase of kidney disease. Look for any signs of increased drinking, decreased urinations, lethargy, painful abdomen, vomiting, or a decreased appetite and have her evaluated immediately if you note any. Yes you can use it. If it's a liquid ask your veterinarian the specific amount to give for his weight. If it's in individual doses the eight pound dose should be fine. Make sure you tell your veterinarian that you have metacam that you want to use so they don't dose Jackson and then you dose him also and therefore give too much. Tramadol and metacam can be given together. They are 2 different drugs with different mechanisms of action and different side effects. Metacam has a very narrow dose whereas tramadol has a wider, safer dose range. Metacam is an NSAID and can cause a variety of side effects, most notably gi ulceration and kidney injury. Dosing of both should be provided by your vet based on your pets health history and bloodwork. Monitoring of bloodwork is very important with metacam use.
