My cat was given NyQuil by a friend to make him sleep. Is it safe?

No, cats are very delicate and have bad reactions to most human medications. Paracetamol can kill a cat so there aren’t any medications that can be given safely to cats. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panadol contains Acetaminophen which is extremely toxic to cats. Whether Kattu with be ok depends on his weight and the dose that was given to him. At toxic doses it causes an issue with red blood cell oxygen carrying abilities and is seen with in 1-4 hours of ingestion and can last 12-48 hours or until death. Clinical signs include cyanosis (blue gums), difficulty breathing, fast breathing, depression, low body temperature weakness, facial edema, and/or edema of the feet. It can also cause liver toxicity, which can develop 24-48 hours after exposure. Clinical signs are jaundice, vomiting, abdominal pain and not eating. It can also rarely cause kidney damage 1-2 days later. Dry eye can devlop 48-72 hours later. Kattu should be hospitalized and be monitored at a 24 hour facility. I wish Kattu the best

Tylenol is highly toxic to cats, and should never be given to them! As little as one tablet of Regular Strength Tylenol contains enough acetaminophen to kill some cats. You need to take her into a vet immediately, this is a medical emergency.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. For that amount he could have issues with both the Acetominophen (30mg/kg) which could cause KCS, which is a problem with the eyes. So for this you will want to get a product like 'Refresh', or some other eye lubricant with no medication and lube his eyes twice a day for the next couple weeks. The biggest concern is the decongestant. If the box says the ingredient is phenylephrine 5mg then you shouldn't be concerned, however if the ingredient is pseudoephedrine then you will want to have Gideon into the vet right away. Otherwise, monitor for signs of anxiousness, hyperactivity, inability to settle, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or increased drinking and peeing. If these occur then go to your vet. If your dog has any clinical signs, or any other underlying disease conditions (which could affect how these drugs affect him, such as liver or kidney disease), then I would bring him right away to the vet. To be extra precautious you could take him to a vet to get him to vomit (remove any remaining toxin in his stomach) however this isn't as effective for the liquid capsules as they absorb quickly, and activated charcoal which will bind any other toxin left in his stomach. Please make sure that Cetirizine is the only medical ingredient in the tablet, and there are no other additives. Pseudoephedrine is very toxic for cats, if this is present in the tablet, go to your vet right away. If you have given 10mg, that is ok, she might just be sleepy. Best of luck with Panda.

Human drugs can cause severe side effects in cats and even death. If you can not afford the testing then ask your Vet for supportive care, things like fluids under the skin and antibiotics for a longer course. In the IS pneumonia is rate in cats. Cats more commonly are chronically infected with viral infections or if they have chronic fevers were worry about Feline Leukemia, FIV and Feline Infectious Peritonitis.
