My cat has a fever and infection. Is human medicine safe for cats?

Hello. Prescribing an antibiotic is a delicate balance between knowing what a pet has & how they will tolerate it. Gentamicin is a powerful antibiotic, but must be used with caution in dehydrated animals, & it is quite easy for a sick cat to become dehydrated. If your cat is in-hospital, then this is being monitored. If not, this is not my first choice of antibiotics to fight infection in a cat, BUT I also have no idea what your cat may have. If you are concerned, you should definitely discuss this with your vet, or perhaps seek a second opinion from some one else who can actually examine Guddu. You can try liquid Benadryl for rhinitis but that is about the only over the counter (OTC) medication you can give a cat. There is nothing you can give for a fever. Cats are extremely sensitive to other OTC medications and you can kill her with them. How do you know she has a fever? Without taking a rectal temperature you cannot be sure. First, it is important for Tigger to finish the full course of his medication for it to work properly. Secondly, a fever is a serious sign.in a cat. It is important to determine why she has a fever so that an appropriate medication can be prescribed to her. Yes, she could have an infection somewhere, but there are numerous other causes of a fever in a cat. She could have an immune mediated disease, heat stroke, stress or even cancer. Fever in cats usually indicates there is an infection present. Cats also can get fever from a flea parasite called Mycoplasma, which is treated with an antibiotic. Most snuffles and flus will resolve themselves over 3-5days once a cat is indoors, warm and dry. If fever is continuing, antiinflammatory and possibly antibiotic medications may need to be prescribed by your vet. Calming supplements and foods should be considered if your cat is very anxious

Firstly, please be sure she actually has a fever. You cannot tell just by touching her. A rectal temperature is needed. I suggest you get an accurate temperature before starting any treatment. If she does have a fever, anything over 103.0F, you can use rubbing alcohol (70%) and wipe it on her paw pads and then recheck her temperature about 15 minutes later. If the fever is due to underlying infection this is not likely to help. You can make her temperature drop too low so be careful you don't cause the opposite problem. Absolutely DO NOT give her any over the counter medications. Many are extremely toxic to cats. Honestly, it is best to find an emergency vet open if possible.
