Why is my cat meowing more after our other cat died? Is it grief?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Lost our 13.5 year old cat this week (gray). Our other cat, almost 10 (white), was extremely rarely vocal. Now several days later, she has started meowing for attention. The two were not very close, more so just tolerated each other. She also went to the vet yesterday for the first time since she was a kitten for a look at a cyst on her eye. Is her change in behavior due to grieving, high stress, or just a change in social dynamic since the “alpha cat” isn’t around anymore?

It's possible Ginger is responding due to the changes in the household. To help her cope, keep her on a routine, set aside 30 minutes a day for playtime and give her lots of attention. Monitor her closely for any signs of illness and have her examined if needed. Most cats will get back to normal within a few weeks. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
