Why is my cat suddenly vocal after another cat passed? Is it grief?

I'm sorry for your loss! Harley may be feeling depressed or stressed about the loss of the other cat too. However, I would also be concerned that Harley may be showing these signs because he may be having health issues. You can try something like a Feliway diffuser to see if that helps with the behavior. But if Harley continues to behave this way I would take him for a check up with your veterinarian. It's possible Ginger is responding due to the changes in the household. To help her cope, keep her on a routine, set aside 30 minutes a day for playtime and give her lots of attention. I suggest you try some Feliway diffusers to see if it will help him. Give it a couple months to see if it helps. The diffusers must be changed every 30 days and you need to get enough diffusers to cover the square footage of the house. Also, some environmental enrichment would be a good idea. Our pets experience grief and loss, and just like people, it takes them a variable amount of time to deal with that loss. If Brostom was very close with the other cat, he might benefit from having another cat in the home to keep him company. If you decide to pursue this, I recommend a slow introduction and keeping the new cat in a separate room for a few days where they can smell each other under the door. If this increases Brostom's agitation, then it might not work, but I think it would be worth trying. I hope this helps.

That’s a tough one! I don’t think the vet would think you are wasting their time as it’s always beneficial to have a physical exam and I think in Stinky Pete’s case, it would be beneficial. Hyperthyroidism can cause increased activity and increased vocalizing and is common in older cats. Older cats can also get dementia which presents the same way. Lastly, older pets can be more prone to anxiety, just like older humans. The vet may test the thyroid and go from there based upon the results. Many of these cats will get sedatives at night if anxiety is suspected. You could also try a pheromone diffuser called Feliway. She may be grieving but at her age I would worry there is an imbalance with her thyroid gland. A cat gland can become hyperactive and when the levels rise, they will eat and lose weight and meow at night and roam randomly. Your vet can check the level with a blood test to be sure

I see that she is an older girl, and so the first thing to do is take her into a vet for a health check. Even though she appears healthy, a sudden change in behavior can be the first sign of an illness. So have her seen by a vet in the next few days. I would also get a Sentry calming collar and a Feliway diffuser. Both release calming pheromones, and that may help with her behavior. While at the vet, if she checks out healthy, the vet can discuss other strategies to deal with this. I hope this helps!
