My cat lost a tooth and bit his lip. How to heal the painful sore?

I am very sorry that Kitty has his sore near her lip. Thank you for proving pictures, it is difficult to know precisely what caused this lesion it may have been a cat scratch, a traumatic puncture from for example a fence, or possible a primary skin like feline acne, or allergic disease. At this stage it appears to be slightly crusted and inflamed and I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian. The vet will most likely clean the wound and debris any necrotic material. The vet may also send home pain relief, anti inflammatory medications and / or antibiotics. The vet will also be able examine the area and reach a diagnosis. This looks to be a little sore on the lip that was caused by some sort of puncture wound, scratch, etc. I would monitor it for now and perhaps use a daily water additive or oral rinse that you can get from your local pet store. If it has not resolved or worsened after 7-10 days, then its best to take Arlo to your local vet to get this checked out to make sure there isn't something underneath the skin that got stuck and can't come out (foreign body) that has caused this. Also the vet can do a complete oral exam as well to ensure the gums and mouth look ok. I hope that your fur baby gets this to heal well soon and that it is just a sore. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Due to the location it is difficult to apply any ointments as Oliver will most likely lick them off. Keeping the area as dry and clean as possible would be the best option. Is it possible that Oliver has any oral lesions (on the inside of his mouth/lip) that could be causing or contributing to the excess drooling you are noting? We can see this commonly in cats that have licked a caustic substance and caused chemical burns within their mouth, but there are also some hypersensitivity disorders cats can have that may predispose them to the development of ulcers within their mouth (i.e. stomatitis, eosinophilic granuloma complex). Based on Oliver's provided age, I would think it is less likely to be a hypersensitivity reaction. These tend to be noted after 6 months of age. If the lesion does not heal and Oliver continues to drool excessively and appear uncomfortable I would recommend having him evaluated by his veterinarian, as analgesics (pain medications) or systemic antibiotics may be warranted. I hope Oliver feels better soon.

I would agree with your veterinarian in that they probably need to sedate or put under anesthesia to be able to better evaluate this region. Then they can treat it accordingly. If it is found to be dental disease, they can correct it then. Best of luck!

Ouch, poor Asia! I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

The pictures attached this time! That sore on Bear's lip looks pretty red and sore. I would be concerned that it could possibly be infected. Likely it's hard to get that to heal given he will probably be licking it with his tongue a lot since it will bother him. I would have him seen by a vet. He will need oral antibiotics if there is an infection to help the sore heal correctly. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Milo! While this is not an emergency, Milo should be seen by your vet as soon as possible. It is never normal for an adult cat to lose a tooth, and if one tooth fell out then I worry that Milo may have some advanced dental disease that needs to be addressed. Excessive licking can be a sign of pain, and losing a tooth is certainly painful! Your vet will examine Milo's mouth, and then will likely want to schedule a full dental procedure under anesthesia to address any other pathology that might be going on in the mouth. Hope this helps!
