What can I put on my cat's lip wound to help it heal faster?

Ouch - yes, poor Oliver does appear to have a pretty large oral ulcer. Most of the time, these oral ulcers are caused by an eosinophilic granuloma complex, but they can be associated with ulcerated masses, such as a squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. I'm glad to hear that you're taking Oliver to his vet as soon as possible. They'll be able to examine him and will likely recommend either taking a biopsy of this lesion so that a pathologist can help to determine the cause of the lesion. Knowing the exact culprit will help to guide the treatment, which is likely to include various oral medications, such as steroids, immunosuppressants, and sometimes antibiotics. I'm really glad to hear that Oliver is still eating and acting normally at home! Until your appointment, you may want to offer him canned food (if you aren't already), as this may be more comfortable for him to eat than dry food. I am very sorry that Kitty has his sore near her lip. Thank you for proving pictures, it is difficult to know precisely what caused this lesion it may have been a cat scratch, a traumatic puncture from for example a fence, or possible a primary skin like feline acne, or allergic disease. At this stage it appears to be slightly crusted and inflamed and I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian. The vet will most likely clean the wound and debris any necrotic material. The vet may also send home pain relief, anti inflammatory medications and / or antibiotics. The vet will also be able examine the area and reach a diagnosis. Poor guy. You can try an over the counter oral rinse or water additive from your local pet store for a few days to a week to see if there is improvement. These products typically provide a really good antiseptic cleanse of the area and can help heal minor lesions around or in the mouth. However, if you notice any swelling, or no improvement within that time frame, its best to have Pete looked at by your vet. He likely will need antibiotics to help it heal if that is the case. Also it is not normal for a pet to loose teeth, so it is best to have Pete a complete oral exam and assessment to ensure he doesn't need further care. I hope that your furry friend gets better soon! Thank you for your question about Oliver. I doubt it's a hot spot as you mentioned he has had it for some time. Some things like mite infections, on going allergies or even something like a eosinophilic granuloma can all have this type of appearance and history. While you can try an at home treatment, it may not work as certain conditions need medications in order to clear. If you want to try anything at home, you first need to protect the area from trauma (Oliver's tongue is very rough) by making Oliver wear and elizabethan collar at all times. Try to wash the area daily with an antibacterial hand soap (rinse it well) as long as Oliver tolerates it. Cats can strike out when they are stressed so make sure to not get bitten or scratched. Alternatively, you can get some pet cleansing wipes and clean the area daily. You can apply a small amount of coconut oil and rub it well into the skin-make sure Oliver does not lick at it. Coconut oil has some antibacterial proprieties and conditions the skin. This may help the wound to heal a little faster. If this does not help within a week, I recommend to take Oliver in to see his veterinarian. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. Please feel free to post any further questions!

I would agree with your veterinarian in that they probably need to sedate or put under anesthesia to be able to better evaluate this region. Then they can treat it accordingly. He could have a skin infection or have the beginnings of a disease known as indolent ulcers. This is a serious condition that is typically triggered by an allergy. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). It may heal on its own, even though it will take few days. Disinfection may be done at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. If the wound will not heal/or at least improve in 5 days, a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
