My cat's fur loss worsened after antibiotics. Is it a reaction?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think at this point it seems like your veterinarian has tried symptomatic therapy to try to help. I would consider taking a culture of the lesion and using the indicated antibiotics. Also, it would be important to ensure that he is unable to chew or lick at it as that will continue to worsen it. You could consider an e-collar which you may get from your local pet store. If it does not resolve, a biopsy of the lesion should be considered. Good luck and have a good day!

If his appetite has decreased with antibiotics, I would recommend discontinuing the antibiotics and seeing how his appetite improves. If he continues to be inappetant or is lethargic, I would have the veterinarian recheck him to ensure everything is ok. If he continues to be itchy, I would recommend using a topical shampoo such as Douxo PS shampoo which can be found online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend using Essential 6 spot on by Dermoscent, which can also be found online. If he continues to be itchy, it may be time to consider switching to a different food or even consider seeing a veterinary dermatologist. I hope this helps! If catfish has only received injectable antibiotics I would also treat using topical medications or shampoos. I recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. Also recommend using a spray such as malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. Does not help then you may need to try a different antibiotic. I hope this helps! Judging from the picture, this could be a ruptured abscess or secondary to self trauma from him scratching at the area. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. He will need the hair clipped from around the wound and the wound cleaned. Hi, I m slightly worried that perhaps this is not just reaction to the scratch but rather a ringworm infestation. It is difficult to tell from the picture. I do think that it is best to have Budd checked over as at least he can received a broader spectrum antibiotic cover and be checked over for ringworm. I hope this helps !

Poor Missy. If the scabs improved at first then it is likely you were on the right track with the antibiotics. You may have to give the antibiotics for a longer period of time. Some pets require 2 weeks or more consecutively to clear up infections on the skin. You can also add in a topical treatment. I highly recommend the Duoxo seborrhea shampoo, if this appears to be a sebborhea problem. Duoxo also carries other medicated shampoos for different skin conditions. The component Chlorhexidine is a good overall antiseptic. If you suspect a fungal component, then you want to go with an anti-fungal ingredient such as Ketoconazole. Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach and nausea to make him feel bad. You may need to change foods to a sensitive stomach or prescription diet formula such as Science diet I/D or W/D to help with going to the bathroom. You can also add miralax to the diet, 1/8 teaspoon twice a week. The best things for hair loss is the continue brushing it to get the clumps out. This can be a sign of stress or an infection. Depending on what type of antibiotic you are on, this may treat that skin also. You can add omega 3 fatty acids to the diet to help with the skin and shedding also.
