My dog is losing hair on antibiotics for cystitis. What helps?

Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach and nausea to make him feel bad. You may need to change foods to a sensitive stomach or prescription diet formula such as Science diet I/D or W/D to help with going to the bathroom. You can also add miralax to the diet, 1/8 teaspoon twice a week. The best things for hair loss is the continue brushing it to get the clumps out. This can be a sign of stress or an infection. Depending on what type of antibiotic you are on, this may treat that skin also. You can add omega 3 fatty acids to the diet to help with the skin and shedding also.

Hair loss can suggest an underlying metabolic disease such as hyperthyroidism. Have your veterinarian run full Bloodwork and a thyroid panel to see if these factors are affecting Sushi’s hair coat as well as making her predisposed to UTIs.

This sounds like normal shedding. I would not be worried unless there are bald spots where all the hair is missing. There is nothing available to stop shedding as it is a normal process. I wouldn’t expect to see hair loss secondary to Clavamox or Quellin. Excessive shedding can sometimes happen secondary to stress, or Pipa could have skin parasites or allergies. It sounds like a good idea to see your vet on Monday to have her skin examined.

I'm sorry that Sid is having this issue. I strongly recommend you take her to the vet for an exam. It is very difficult to tell much from the photo you posted. Hairless can be caused by any number of issues: hormones (if she is not fixed), an underlying endocrine disease like Cushing's or hypothyroidism, parasites (mites, fleas, etc) or she may have an allergy or a bacterial or fungal infection of the skin. As you can see, it is not something that can be easily distinguished with an internet photo. You can certainly try a medicated shampoo. I do not know what you have available in India but I would suggest one like this one. Do an allergy test so you can find out what he is allergic to (if anything). It looks as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. 

The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. 

The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of hair loss, redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. A skin scraping and skin cytology should be performed to rule out mites and to determine the type of infection present (bacterial vs fungal). Your dog will most likely need antibiotics/antifungals longterm to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo will be beneficial as well. I would also recommend he be on a good flea control routinely too. Once the infection has resolved a long term allergy medication (like Apoquel or Cytopoint) can be given on a regular basis to prevent any future problems. I hope this helps.
