Why is my cat losing hair after UTI treatment and antibiotics?

Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach and nausea to make him feel bad. You may need to change foods to a sensitive stomach or prescription diet formula such as Science diet I/D or W/D to help with going to the bathroom. You can also add miralax to the diet, 1/8 teaspoon twice a week. The best things for hair loss is the continue brushing it to get the clumps out. This can be a sign of stress or an infection. Depending on what type of antibiotic you are on, this may treat that skin also. You can add omega 3 fatty acids to the diet to help with the skin and shedding also.

It is not common for antibiotics to cause hair fall. It is not impossible, but it is not likely. Are you sure it's not just normal shedding? If you are having trouble getting the thyroid under control, you may look into the prescription diet Science Diet Y/D. This diet works well for a lot of cats and eliminates the need for medication. I am sorry to hear about Sushi! I would recommend following up with her veterinarian. I would be concerned she could have allergies to airborne allergens (called atopic dermatitis) which responded to the steroids, but the steroids do not get rid of the allergies, just help relieve the symptoms, so often a pet may need to be put on other medications long term to keep the allergies under control. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Sushi regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

She could have a skin infection and/or an allergic dermatitis. She may need an antibiotic and/or corticosteroid to help treat. It would also be a good idea to recheck her thyroid level if she hasn't had it checked in the last 6 months.

The most common sign of a thyroid problem in cats is weight loss. Hair loss around the tail could be secondary to a skin infection, fleas, allergies, etc. The best thing would be to schedule an appointment with your vet for a physical examination to determine the cause and treat.
