My cat is on antibiotics and won't eat. Could he be feeling nauseous?

Many antibiotics cause gastrointestinal issues in cats so you will need to call your vet and let them know what is going on. Most likely they will have you stop one or both of the antibiotics and prescribe something different. I would also suggest that you put him on a pre/probiotic while he is taking antibiotics and then continue for at least one week after the antibiotics have been stopped. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. If his appetite does not improve by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as anorexia can be detrimental to a cat's health. Good luck and have a great day!

I’m so sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. If the other symptoms have begun to resolve and the anorexia is the only problem then yes, it could be from the antibiotics. If however the initial symptoms have not resolved and now your cat is not eating it is probably due to a progression of the disease. If this is the case, then I would recommend taking your cat back in to have a recheck. He may need additional medications and treatments or he may be at the end stages of his disease. Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach and nausea to make him feel bad. You may need to change foods to a sensitive stomach or prescription diet formula such as Science diet I/D or W/D to help with going to the bathroom. You can also add miralax to the diet, 1/8 teaspoon twice a week. The best things for hair loss is the continue brushing it to get the clumps out. This can be a sign of stress or an infection. Depending on what type of antibiotic you are on, this may treat that skin also. You can add omega 3 fatty acids to the diet to help with the skin and shedding also.

I think your vet's response was the correct one. All antibiotics carry a risk of intestinal upset and vaccines can certainly make pets feel "off". If he's not feeling better tomorrow, he needs to go back in to the vet.

Antibiotics can cause GI upset in cats, so it could be that Korben Dallas was eating less while he was on the antibiotics. Now that he's off the antibiotics, he's feeling better and eating much more quickly. That would be why he's throwing up all of his food. I would try to feed him smaller amounts more frequently to have him slow down his eating. If that doesn't help with the vomiting, I would take him into the vet for an exam, as he could have a medical illness causing the vomiting.

Hello. Thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am not familar with the antibiotic that you specifically have mentioned. However, in the US we do use something that sounds similar, called Clavamox. Either way, all antibiotics should be given with food if at all possible to avoid upset stomach. Many cats have a reduced appetite when they have a fever, so it is not surprising that Haro Kitaru is not eating on her own. I am very sorry that she is feeling ill and has a fever. If you are able to give her a small amount of chicken or turkey baby food before administering the antibiotic that would be best. This will reduce the chance of causing an upset stomach.
