Can hand sanitizer poison my cat? What if my senior cat licked it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

Can a house cat be poisoned by the hand sanitizer we are all using during Covid? Our senior kitty has been suffering from a gastrointestinal illness for 2 weeks now, been back and forth to the vet and underwent a full battery of tests including an MRI – nothing serious turned up – however yesterday he took a turn for the worse and has been vomiting yellow bile. He is listless and doesn’t want attention. Any advice?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beeloo. If a cat consumed a significant amount of hand sanitizer, it would be toxic. The high alcohol content will result in drunken behavior, sleepiness and likely vomiting. However, this would not likely be seen from sniffing your hands or you petting him after applying it to your hands. I suspect that there is another illness causing the symptoms. I hope this information helps!
