My cat is lethargic, not eating, and hiding. Does he need a vet?

Hi there! Simon needs to be seen by the vet. Decreased energy and decreased appetite tells us that he's not feeling well. Drinking a lot more than usual makes me concerned about an internal problem such as diabetes or kidney disease. I recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as possible. Your vet will likely want to check a urine sample and run some bloodwork to determine what's going on, in order to determine the best course of treatment.

I'm sorry to hear that Lily has been feeling so poorly today. As Dr. Melanie mentioned, lethargy and a loss of appetite can be due to many underlying health conditions. Since she seems to prefer laying down, it's also possible that she's experiencing some degree of pain or discomfort. Some of these possible conditions include pancreatitis, infectious diseases (FIV, feline leukemia, FIP, etc.), constipation, kidney disease, liver disease, toxin exposure (did she eat a plant, medication or something else she shouldn't have?), or many other conditions. The fact that she hasn't been using the litter box normally might be a sign that she is dehydrated, even though she's drinking water when it's placed in front of her. At this point, it would be best to take Lily to her vet fairly urgently for evaluation. Your vet will need to examine her and will likely recommend some diagnostic testing, which may include blood work, an ultrasound or x-rays, to get to the bottom of this issue. Poor Binx! Yes, this is a vet visit when a cat is both vomiting and having diarrhea as well as being very lethargic. I'm concerning he's throwing up water as well, and that can quickly lead to dehydration. Given how suddenly he's become sick and his combination of symptoms, I recommend taking him into a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It sounds like your kitty is very ill. I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic (or his regular clinic tomorrow if an emergency clinic is not possible) for an exam and labwork. This could be something treatable (or at least manageable, if not curable) or it may not be. I would be worried about kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, cancer, and liver disease - it could definitely be other things too, but these are at the top of my list. It sounds like he should be examined by a vet to rule out a medical problem. He could have an infection, parasite, metabolic, and/or endocrine disease and your vet can run blood work to help diagnose and the determine if treatment is needed. Hope he feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Prince! From your pictures his eyes are a bit more dilated than normal. I am worried about your description of his symptoms. Has he been urinating? How old is he? It is possible that the old treats have caused an upset stop but it is probably a bit unlikely. I highly recommend having him seen today when your Vet opens, especially if you haven't seen him urinate since he started getting sick. Not being able to urinate for male cats is an emergency. Other possibilities are: viral or bacterial infection, toxin ingestion or he ate something causing a blockage. If he is old I would worry about kidney or liver disease and cancer. Poor Alvin - it sounds like he is not doing well, especially if he is lethargic and moving very little. These signs are very nonspecific and can be caused by a number of things, from an injury to a serious infection. I recommend having him seen by a vet right away. It is likely best to have him seen in an emergency clinic, most towns/cities have at least one that is open 24 hours/day. I hope all is well!
