My cat is weak, lethargic, throwing up, and won't eat. What to do?

My cat prince over the last day and a half is very weak and lethargic. He has been throwing up a few times a day and has no interest in eating or drinking. I've tried to give him food and water but he wont eat or drink. When he tries to walk hes very weak. And he meows a slow meow. I gave him some treats a few days ago that we've had for a while (over 6 months) and was wondering if he perhaps got sick from those. I'm sure he's dehydrated. Please help.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Prince!

From your pictures his eyes are a bit more dilated than normal. I am worried about your description of his symptoms. Has he been urinating? How old is he? It is possible that the old treats have caused an upset stop but it is probably a bit unlikely. I highly recommend having him seen today when your Vet opens, especially if you haven't seen him urinate since he started getting sick. Not being able to urinate for male cats is an emergency. Other possibilities are: viral or bacterial infection, toxin ingestion or he ate something causing a blockage. If he is old I would worry about kidney or liver disease and cancer.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about Prince.

It sounds like Prince is very sick. Vomiting can be a sign of a variety of disease processes both within or outside the GI tract. Additionally weakness and decreased appetite could be secondary to many things such as low blood pressure, pain, etc. I would recommend having Prince evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to perform an examination and diagnostics such as a blood pressure check and blood work. It sounds like Prince’s symptoms have progressed quite quickly so I would recommended consulting with an ER practice if your regular office is closed.

My dog won't eat or drink and is throwing up. Is it serious?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry Prince isn't feeling well! Unfortunately, those are quite nonspecific symptoms, and could be consistent with almost any illness. If Prince isn't eating or drinking, and is vomiting, he really needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your vet can determine quite a lot by a good exam, and will then be able to recommend any appropriate diagnostic tests to determine what's wrong. At the very least, your vet can help Prince feel better with supportive care to control his nausea, and give fluids to correct his dehydration. I worry especially with his young age and being such a little guy, he can become dehydrated quickly. I hope he feels better soon!

My 5-week-old kitten is lethargic, throwing up, and can't walk well.

Kittens are susceptible to many different infections, both viral & bacterial. A heavy parasite burden from coccidia, or roundworms can also wear a kitten down & leave it weak. Pascal is too young & small to try & fight this off on his own. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If you can not have him seen tonight or tomorrow, pick up some Nutrical from Petco tomorrow, & try to give him small amount frequently throughout the day. This is a high calorie supplement to hopefully keep his energy up. Then please try to have him seen by your veterinarian as early as possible on Monday. I hope he does better soon. Please make sure he is passing urine. As you know male cats can get a urinary blockage that can quickly become life threatening. If he’s not urinating that is a medical emergency so take him in right away to have him checked. Vomiting and lethargy can be a sign also. They can get kidney damage from this too. Loss of appetite and diarrhea can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Otto evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam.
