My cat has a black thing near her anus and now a red spot. What is it?

My female cat had a weird / strange black thing or black things stuck to her near the anus. I dunno since when she had it, but I've noticed today. She's also in the heat period which started about 1-2 days ago. Initially I thought it's a kind of a bug or something. I tried to pull it out and I succesfully did it, but I'm not sure what it is nor if I did a bad thing. She was left with that red spot now I'm very worried about her and about what I did. I think she might be constipated too.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Maty. Sometimes anal gland material and can dry up and be present near the gland opening at the anus. The red spot in your final picture appears to be separate from the anus though. In this case, an anal gland abscess or infection could be the cause. This is a painful condition and can cause difficulty defecating. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian to determine if treatment is necessary. I hope this information helps!

    It could be a growth or an irritated spot on Penny’s anis. If she’s acting normally and using the litter normally, I’d keep an eye on her for now. If it gets bigger, she has trouble going poop, becomes lethargic, has a decrease in appetite, or it bothers her, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Those are the openings to the anal glands. Sometimes some dried anal gland material can accumulate at the opening. If Poopsie is not scooting or licking excessively I think you can wait to see your vet for an appointment.

My cat has a painful anal sore and is straining. What should I do?
That dark discoloration implies that top skin no longer has blood supply and it is not healthy tissue. This is likely an abscess from an injury or previous bite wound. Typically they can heal on their own, but the bacteria get trapped and cause this. She will need to see a vet for further treatment as that spot may have to be surgically removed and the area cleaned and flushed out. Antibiotics need to be given to maintain control of the infection so it can heal. These areas are very painful so any touching or straining is not recommend.

If you are seeing diarrhea, worms, a rash, etc. I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

She may have an anal sac abscess, or she could have a little bit of colitis and she just hasn’t had a bowel movement for you to see the full effect of what is going on. My senior cat has a lesion near her anus. Is it an an emergency?
Hi, If I read the pic correctly with the anus above it to the left, the lesion may be a perianal fistula. In cats, where these fistulas are quite rare, the problem is usually in the glands or anal sacs. Perianal fistulas are unpleasant and painful, and require veterinary treatment such as antibiotics, so please take her to the vet sooner than later.

Poor girl. This does appear to be a possible anal gland abscess rupture. She will need antibiotics from your vet and anti-inflammatory medicaiton to get this to heal well. Most cats won’t let you flush this unless they are mildly sedated or restrained by a trained professional; therefore, I would not advise you trying to clean this area yourself. It’s best to take Rose in to your local vet in the morning to get this taken care of. She will be in discomfort until then, but these aren’t typically life threatening. I hope Rose gets this to heal soon. Best wishes and take care.
