Why does my cat's rear smell foul and leak clear, awful liquid?

It could be dis charge from his anal glands. Normally, the glands are emptied during the act of defecation. Sometimes though, the glands become impacted then infected. An abscess will form then eventually rupture and drain. If there is no redness, swelling or discharge around the anus, look for swelling elsewhere. If he is an outdoor cat, a bite wound abscess is a possibility. They can be difficult to spot without a close exam and maybe shaving a swollen area. Ideally, he should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Especially if he is lethargic, feverish or not eating.

It sounds like the odor you are describing is discharge from Ed's anal glands. Anal glands are a scent marking gland (as you could guess) since they produce a very strong odor. It is normal to animals to express anal gland material when very stimulated or startled. However, I would recommend having your vet examine Ed's anal glands to make sure they are not overly full. I'm guessing Good has watery diarrhea, although anal glands could also produce a small amount of bad smelling fluid that could leak from her anus. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian if you aren't sure what this fluid it. If it seems to be diarrhea parasites would be a possible cause. Anal glands can become infected or impacted and produce more fluid than normal.

Cats have two small scent glands on either side of their rectum called anal glands - if these glands have been leaking a little or if she has expressed them recently, you may notice a very strong odor from her rear end. You can try cleaning the area around her rectum with some warm water and soap to help get rid of the smell. If this is a recurring problem, I recommend having her seen by a vet to check for infection or impaction of the glands.

That could typically be due either to anal gland infection/inflammation or diarrhoea with liquid feces. A check up is necessary if the signs are not resolving, despite a change in the dietary regime (bland diet with chicken and rice for the next 3-4 days). Antibiotics and anal gland expression may be needed.

Anal glands are scent glands inside the anus that are expressed with defecation. If she was scared suddenly they can accidentally release the anal gland material. The other possibility is that she is starting with diarrhea and some leaked out. Keep an eye on the litter box and see how her stools are. It can leak out when the glands are full or if something scares the cat, they can express them. The anal glands normally are expressed during defecation.
