My cat is in labor, given oxytocin, panting, no kittens. Emergency?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no! With the previous history of a C-section and how she is behaving now has me really worried. She needs to see a Vet now, waiting until the morning is not advised. Is there an open emergency hospital or vet that has hours now? I do not know what shape Fruity will be in and if the kittens will be alive by the morning. I wish you add Fruity the best!

This sounds like an odd behavior. Did Watson have x-rays prior to having kittens to count how many she should deliver? It is possible that there is still a remaining kitten inside and that she is going back to her delivery area in an attempt to pass the remaining kitten. I would recommend that she be seen by a vet to make sure there is not one leftover.

If she isn't close to being due she should see a Vet right away. I would have her somewhere quiet and calm. Keep children, a lot of people and animals out. If there isn't a kitten born in 2 hours with this panting she should be seen by a Vet. Panting in cats is not normal in any other situation. I wish you the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would be sure Mochi is in a quiet cool place with out many people and other animals. When stressed cats can delay labor. I would leave her be and check on her every 30 mins. If she has been actively contracting for more than 2 hours with out a birth of a kitten I would have her seen by a Vet as that could indicate a problem. I wish Mochi the best!

Cats can stop birthing and then finish up to 24 hours later if they are disrupted by something. But it's rare and that doesn't seem to be the case in Cali's situation. So I think it's best to err on the side of caution and get Cali into the veterinarian's office right away. She may need help having the kittens or she may need a C-section. Panting can be normal after giving birth. Lactation will stimulate the uterus to contract during the first two weeks after giving birth, thus leading to the panting. Make sure Twitch is eating and drinking normally, has a normal vagina discharge, and has a normal temperature (between 101-102.5F). If this panting increasing, she stops nursing her kittens, she has a fever, or has any other concerning signs, take Twitch and her kittens into a vet immediately.

Miscarriage and dystocia are possible in this case and an immediate veterinary check up would be needed to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. C section may be needed.
