My cat is in prolonged labor, panting, not delivering. What now?

It sounds like this cat needs a c-section. Cats rarely have issues giving birth so there is definitely a problem. More oxytocin is not likely to help. I suggest you call the vet back and take her for surgery. If the vet is not available just keep the cat in a calm, quiet area until you can get to the vet in the morning.

I would leave her be and check on her every 30 mins. If she has been actively contracting for more than 2 hours with out a birth of a kitten I would have her seen by a Vet as that could indicate a problem. I wish Mochi the best!

If she isn't close to being due she should see a Vet right away. I would have her somewhere quiet and calm. Keep children, a lot of people and animals out. If there isn't a kitten born in 2 hours with this panting she should be seen by a Vet. Panting in cats is not normal in any other situation. I wish you the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Birdie!! Cats can get very easily stressed when in labor and can delay the birth of subsequent kittens up to 24 hours. If she is actively contracting for greater than 2 hours without the birth of a kitten she needs to go to an emergency hospital. I would confine her to a quiet place with the kitten. Only one person should check on her every 1-2 hours. Keep the room dim and do not allow a lot of stress. I hope this helps and I wish Birdie the best!

Hello, my name is Dr. Shines and this is concerning. Yes, I recommend to get Cali to the veterinarian ASAP. Cats can stop birthing and then finish up to 24 hours later if they are disrupted by something. But it's rare and that doesn't seem to be the case in Cali's situation. So I think it's best to err on the side of caution and get Cali into the veterinarian's office right away. She may need help having the kittens or she may need a C-section. If Lucy seems comfortable, is caring well for the kittens, & you do not see her pushing or having active contractions, then you can let her rest. You may be feeling a contracted uterine horn, or it may be another kitten, but if she is content then you can probably wait until the morning to have her checked out. Since it is already late, you would have to take her in to the emergency clinic anyway, but I would not recommend it, yet. If she becomes restless, vocal, & you see her pushjng for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, then take her in. Hopefully, this will not be necessary. Take care.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree with you that Oreo needs to go to a vet. It sounds like you should do your best to not wait until Tuesday. If there is a 24 hour clinic in your area, or if your vet provides after-hours care, then I would get Oreo in right away. There isn't really anything you can do for him at home given what you have described. Usually if you call your vet, even if they are closed they will leave a message that tells you who to call in case of an emergency. If your vet doesn't have this try other vets in your area.
