My cat was just neutered. Is it safe for him to run and jump?

Hello, Im glad to hear Felix is already doing well. He should be fine if he is kept quiet for the next several days. To prevent jumping and excessive activity, you may need to confine him to a small pen or crate. However, if this is stressing him out to much, you can also try to confine him to a small room. Ultimately, if he is still not keeping quiet, then just watching him for any bleeding while he wonders around would be the best in order to prevent him from being too stressed. It likely is just fine to take the cone off now. Cats are quick healers. However make sure you look at the incision site thoroughly for any areas that look troublesome and get them evaluated by your vet if seen. Most cats do hate wearing the cone at home. It is tough to watch them act in this manner. However, in order to help prevent him from both injuring himself trying to get it off and also keeping him from getting to his incision, it may be best to keep him in a small room like the bathroom for tonight, then call your vet on tomorrow and ask for a sedative to give him at home while he still recovers from surgery. Some pets will be more active once they wake up from sedation. This is usually temporary and will usually wear off in a few hours. It is very important to try to keep his activity minimal. I recommend to have him contained in one room with his litter box, food and water. Try to pick a room that does not have tall furniture or anything that he may try to climb or jump off and on. You may need to hang out with him until he calms down. Playing classical music may also help and decreasing stimulation in general. Give pain medication as prescribed by your veterinarian. It is important to make sure that you restrict his activity to short leash walks only (for the purpose of going to the bathroom) for the first week after surgery. Excessive activity such as running jumping or playing will increase the likelihood of complications. Lastly, but most importantly, he must wear an E collar (cone of shame) to prevent him from looking at or biting at the incision. Licking or biting the incision could lead to the incision coming apart and a need for further surgery. It could also lead to the incision becoming infected which could even make him systemically ill. The incisions will heal very quickly, assuming we are talking about a male cat. When you take him home your vet will give you detailed instructions to help guide you !

The Ecollar will need to stay on for a couple of days while the wound is initially healing, but as long as Dodger leaves the incision alone, you can take it off after four to seven days. It can take up to 10 days for the incision to fully heal, and if he is licking it excessively when the collar is removed, then it will have to stay on. He won't hurt himself in the collar, a lot of cats are annoyed by them, but it's important to make sure they aren't allowed to lick the incision. Licking in the incision will interrupt the healing process and will introduce infection into the area.
