My cat is hyper and jumping after spay surgery. How to calm her?

Sounds like Pickle is pretty active! I would see if you could distract her with a toy that takes less movement (such as some kitty treats hidden inside something), or if you can get her to calm down with some gentle petting or brushing. If she gets too active, distracting her with something that requires less movement may also help. I would also just keep an eye on the suture site and check it a few times daily to make sure the sutures aren't pulling at it's still closing, even if she's a little more active. If they appear to be coming apart or infected, let your vet know as they may need to reclose it or give a short-term sedative to help keep her calmer.

Some pets will be more active once they wake up from sedation. This is usually temporary and will usually wear off in a few hours. It is very important to try to keep his activity minimal. I recommend to have him contained in one room with his litter box, food and water. Try to pick a room that does not have tall furniture or anything that he may try to climb or jump off and on. You may need to hang out with him until he calms down. Playing classical music may also help and decreasing stimulation in general. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Artemis. Most of the time, stitches are removed at 10-14 days post-surgery. By this point, she will be completely healed. The goal is no running, jumping or playing until this time. This is difficult with young kittens however. So do your best to limit her activities. It is fine if she sleeps with you at night if this is what she usually does. I would keep the bedroom door closed so that if she jumps off the bed, she is at least confined to the room. The surgery can make her slightly more prone to weight gain so watch her calorie intake. This is a greater problem in adult cats though. The surgery should not cause any behavioral changes. Sometimes kittens can actually get hyperactive in response to the sedatives that are used during the procedure. You definitely don’t want Ginger jumping around or being too active. I recommend to shut him either in a small bathroom or a large dog crate. Make sure to provide his food, water and litter box. Hang out with him if you need to until he calms down. I suspect the sniffing is also just a side effect from the sedative. If he does not seem normal by tomorrow, call his veterinarian. If Lola is being too crazy post-spay, then I would contact the veterinarian to see if the veterinarian can prescribe Lola a sedative to help keep her more calm. The last thing you want is for Lola to open up her incision because she is too active. I hope this helps!

I'm glad Jay's incision looks good! A spay is an abdominal surgery, and cats can be quieter for a bit after the surgery. This is normal, and it's actually better that she is quiet because you want her to rest as much as possible. Now if you are afraid she is in pain, give your vet a call. They can prescribe some more pain medications for her if needed. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Make sure she is eating and drinking water, and continue to keep an eye on her and her incision. It's probably best to simply give her space if she seems to be in a place where she feels safe. If she seems very agitated you can try to take her to a smaller, more enclosed area. Feliway sprays and diffusers can help calm an anxious cat as well.
