My cat has hot water burns and open wounds. What should I do?

It sounds like the area has blistered, and this is now a medical emergency. This can no longer be treated at home, Jacky has to see a vet now. He will also need pain medication, as this will be very painful to him. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Please take him into a vet immediately.

Also, it would be nice to know when this actually happened. Burns can be very serious and we need to at least see some photos to better guide you. This kitten is going to need vaccines, deworming, neutering, etc so you should start looking now for a low cost veterinarian for him now. Please post again with some photos and more information. I am so sorry for your cats injuries. Please take her to your vet to have these injuries cared for properly. These are too extensive for at home treatment. Until you can get her in to your vet for much needed wound management and antibiotics; it is best to clean this with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to help antiseptically clean the area. You can also try shaving the hair around the wounds to help remove dirt from the area, but only do so if your pet tolerates it. If not, then its best to just let your vet do it, as this is a crucial step in allowing these areas to heal well. I do hope that you are able to seek medical care for Kiara soon! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know the most appropriate course of action without knowing the extent of his injuries. However, the best thing you can do is to keep him as quiet as possible for now until you can have him evaluated by a veterinarian. He likely has trauma in multiple places which is why he is so responsive to the touch. Often times after fights they have injuries beyond what you can see from the outside. They would be able to check the extent of the injuries and recommend the best course of action but for now, I recommend that you rest him as much as possible and keep an eye on him to make sure he is ok. Antibiotic ointment may not by enough to treat it and Collic possibly will need a course of antibiotic in form of tablets to get back to normal. I would recommend Collic to be checked over by your local vets to fully assess the wound and to recommend the best treatment option.

These sound like wounds from being in a bad fight with another cat. It’s best to have these treated by your veterinarian if you can. In the meantime clean each wound with hydrogen peroxide and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. I’m concerned about the ones around his anus. There may be a tear in the rectum that may be very serious and need a veterinary exam to determine if the feces are coming out the wound. If so this could cause more infection and may need to be stitched closed. Antibiotics will help these wounds heal more quickly also. I'm sorry to hear Pepper is having issues. I would recommend having the wounds evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine their severity and any treatment (antibiotics or antiinflammatories) that may be needed. We would be concerned that while the superficial part of the wound is small, there could be a large pocket underneath the skin that could lead to an abscess. If there is a chance that the wounds came from a fight with another animal, we would be concerned that they could become infected. While I am not familiar with the laws in the U.K., Here in the US, if the wounds could have come from an unknown source outside we would also need to booster her rabies vaccine.
