Should I bring my cat to Petco to get a harness and leash fitted?

Yes. Cats can go for walks. Some cats do very well and some cats do not. Get Honey adjusted to the harness inside first, then introduce her to the outside. Cats should wear a harness. Pet stores sell harnesses and light leashed for cats. Make sure to fit it properly so she cannot escape. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

You should only be able to fit 2 fingers underneath. You should be able to find a harness in her size. If you are going to leave it on all the time I typically then recommend a breakaway collar. That way if she gets it caught on something it automatically breaks. If it is just to go outside with you then a harness is a great idea, just make sure you remove it when you are done. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There isn't an answer to that question in terms of a specific time, as it depends on each individual pet! I think it's a great idea for cats who want to enjoy the outside in a safe way; I would recommend by starting to have Oreo wear a harness around the house to get her used to wearing it, then attach her leash while in the house and allow her to adjust to its weight. Finally, then I'd take her outside for an adjustment to being in the yard on it. Some cats progress in a couple weeks, and others can take a little longer. Good luck!

I would suggest sticking with a harness you are sure that your cat annoy scape from. Also, since you are taking him for walks regularly I would recommend making sure you have your cat microchipped so that if he does get away from you he will have a better chance of being returned. In my experience, a cat who wants to escape from something like a harness will eventually find a way. I do think that this type tends to work a little better: I also think training is very important: put the harness on for very short periods of time while offering food or a treat and gradually work your way up to longer time. If he starts to get upset with the harness training is over and you should take it off. All harness time should be fun! Once he seems comfortable you can then try adding a lead.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cats, with a bit of work, can be taught to walk on a leash ( harness ). The best would be never to let your cat outdoors as this increases the chances of run ins with cars, dogs & other cats. But once a cat is comfortable in a home, they very rarely leave, unless something happens. Make sure Luna is spayed, & consider placing a microchip in her. That way, if she does slip off, any veterinarian or shelter can scan her & get her back home to you quickly. Hope this helps. Take care.
