My cat hates harnesses. What's a comfortable, secure walking vest?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 9 months old

I had good advice from you to walk my cat,who loves outside with cat-harness and need some more advices,he hates to be hold in his chest area over the lungs when I take him from the ground,so instead of regular cat-harness I bought polar(he loves polar)vest with place for the leash,is that good or what is the best to be less disturbing and most difficult to take off,because he's strong and clever, I'm afraid if he escape from it,he won't come home for longer time and he will lose his trust in me

I would suggest sticking with a harness you are sure that your cat annoy scape from. Also, since you are taking him for walks regularly I would recommend making sure you have your cat microchipped so that if he does get away from you he will have a better chance of being returned.

In my experience, a cat who wants to escape from something like a harness will eventually find a way. I do think that this type tends to work a little better: I also think training is very important: put the harness on for very short periods of time while offering food or a treat and gradually work your way up to longer time. I recommend foods that follow WSAVA guidelines which includes Hill’s Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Iams and Eukanuba. There is some evidence that wet food may have some health benefits - many cats do best on a combo. I would recommend using mealtime to help get her used to having he harness out on. If it’s possible to put it on in stages you could slowly get her used to it. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cats, with a bit of work, can be taught to walk on a leash ( harness ). The best would be never to let your cat outdoors as this increases the chances of run ins with cars, dogs & other cats. But once a cat is comfortable in a home, they very rarely leave, unless something happens. Make sure Luna is spayed, & consider placing a microchip in her. That way, if she does slip off, any veterinarian or shelter can scan her & get her back home to you quickly. Hope this helps. Take care.

Hi, it’s understandable that Bagheera was worried at the vets visit. He hadn’t been through this experience before and in general cats don’t cope well with novelty. In general, there are lots of things that you can do from positive reinforcement and sensitisation. I would suggest to read this invaluable book the trainable cat by Bradshaw and S. Ellis. Have a look at clicker training for cats, it’s fun and they can learn lots of things ! Is there any chance you could have a restricted area to the outdoors ? Hope this helps

How tight should a cat harness be and can a dog harness fit a cat?

You should only be able to fit 2 fingers underneath. You should be able to find a harness in her size. If you are going to leave it on all the time I typically then recommend a breakaway collar. That way if she gets it caught on something it automatically breaks. If it is just to go outside with you then a harness is a great idea, just make sure you remove it when you are done. Yes. Cats can go for walks. Some cats do very well and some cats do not. Get Honey adjusted to the harness inside first, then introduce her to the outside. Cats should wear a harness. Why is my cat's skin itchy from his walking harness or vest?

It sounds like the vest is rubbing and may have even caused a skin infection. I would have a vet check it out to see if the skin needs treatment. They can also help you make adjustments to the vest so that it is not comfortable for Tikvichko to wear. Once the inflammation calms down, the rough skin should go back to normal over a couple months.
