My cat had one kitten, but her belly is hard after birth. Is she okay?

This could be a swollen mammary gland that got very inflamed, it's quite common in lactating cats, you should get it checked by your vet as she may need to take anti inflammatories if it is bothering her.

Hi there and I am very sorry to hear about Cotton's kittens. I presume an xray was not taken when she was pregnant to determine the official kitten count. Yes, there may still be another kitten in there, most likely not alive, or it may be that she has an infection of her uterus. I would highly recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian as soon as you can. They can do an examine to see if they feel a fetus, determine if she has a fever or is dehydrated and ill, and take an xray if needed to see if she has a kitten (or two) in there or if her uterus is infected. If this is left untreated she may get sick very quickly, so the sooner she can be seen the better. Once again, I am very sorry about the kittens.

If Fluffu did not have an xray to determine the amount of kittens prior to labor (which I assume based on your question that she did not) then it is hard to say for certain about what you are feeling. The "hard lump" could be her uterus not yet contracted down to a small size, her mammary glands (those are outside the abdomen but you may still be feeling them as the "hard lump"), another kitten, or simply a full stomach. Hopefully there is not another kitten in there at this point since she is finished with labor. You can monitor and watch her closely and continue to feel the "hard lump", but if you are pretty suspicious about the possibility of another kitten the safest thing to do is to have a veterinarian examine her. The doctor may be able to tell just on physical exam what the hard lump is or can take an xray for definitive diagnosis of knowing if there is another kitten in there. Mimi's stomach might still look big from the uterus being enlarged - it can take a little while for it to look normal again. If Mimi seems to be pushing still, if she seems uncomfortable or if you can feel a kitten moving in her belly then there would be more concern. I'm wondering if emergency veterinary services might still be available - you may want to try contacting your local health department to see. Unfortunately there's nothing I could recommend trying at home if there is a kitten still inside.

Generally a cat is not visibly pregnant until 5-6weeks and would have kittens within 3-4weeks. A vet should be able to feel kittens in the belly at this stage and if negative further investigation may be recommended especially if there is any changes in appetite or thirst or she is lethargic.

You need to take the kitten into a vet immediately, this is a medical emergency. It looks like a herniation of the intestines, which cannot be treated at home. Please take her, your cat, and the other babies into a vet now
