My cat has a goopy eye and can't open it. What should I do?

It could be Oreo has hurt his eye or has an eye infection. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into a vet today to have this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

It does look as if your car has an eye infection. If there is any associates sneezing and/or coughing it may be an upper respiratory infection as well. Based on the pictures a corneal ulceration cannot be ruled out. I would recommend taking your cat in to be examined by your veterinarian so the exact cause of the eye discharge can be determined. Your kitty likely is suffering from an upper respiratory infection and should be seen by a vet for an exam and deworming. It will likely need prescription antibiotics. In the meantime (until you can take her to a vet) you can tak a cloth with warm water an soak the eyes. This should help with opening them. You can then gently wipe off the purulent discharge.

If the discharge is continuous, or he is squinting or eyes are matted closed he should see a veterinarian to determine the cause of the ocular discharge. Do not use any sort of eye drops without a veterinary prescription. Treatment will vary depending on the cause of the infection or inflammation.

Many times these infections are viral in nature and some can take several weeks before they finally go away. The big things would be to make sure Oreo eats a good diet like Royal Canin. This way you know you are getting good nutrition to support a healthy body. There's a supplement for cats called Lysine which can also help. Lastly, make sure Oreo is negative for immune suppressing viruses such as Felv and FIV. I hope this helps.

Poor Oreo! Bloodshot eyes and discharge (especially yellow or green discharge) or "eye boogers" are usually signs of an eye infection. Oreo will need prescription eye drops to treat the infection, so I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked as soon as you are able to. In the meantime, you can try rinsing his eyes with plain saline eye wash and using a warm washcloth to gently wipe away any discharge as often as needed. This will not treat the underlying problem, but may help to make Oreo a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

Upper respiratory disease is very common in kittens and often times the eyes can be a target of infection for the various viruses and bacteria that are associated with feline URI's. I always stress the important of getting eye problems seen immediately and early since the eyes are very important sense organs and they can deteriorate rather quickly. Your vet can examine the eyes, evaluate for the presence of an upper respiratory infection and then advise tests to closer evaluate the eyes themselves. This includes staining of the eye to look for corneal damage (outer surface), tear production, and measuring the pressure inside the eye. Often times we just stain the eyes and want to see the integrity of the cornea. Once a diagnosis is made of corneal scratch/damage or not, treatment can be advised. We use many different approaches for this disease. Oral antibiotics, Eye drops/ointments, nasal drops, L-lysine as a supplement since it affects viral replication, antiviral medicines, probiotics to enhance the gut immunity, deworming to decrease added stress on the kitten, and vaccines to try to boost the immune response towards these viruses. So I would make an appointment and see your vet today. You and Suga will feel better.
