My senior cat went blind, but now she's seeing again. What happened?

My 19 year old Persian cat went blind last December. Took her to a vet..he diagnosed a mitral valve cardiac murmur at 6 and said she looked like she had renal problems also. He prescribed propanolol and k/d diet. K/d didn’t agree with her so I put her on a phosphorus binder. At the vets office her pupils did not react to light and she acted blind. Gradually her pupils have been reacting some to light and she has also started jumping again...she had quit jumping when she went blind.

I would guess that Ebony may have had retinal detachment secondary to high blood pressure. Kidney disease can cause increased blood pressure. If her retinas partially reattached she may have regained some vision.

Yes, please have her reevaluated. The blindness likely is caused by high blood pressure and the high blood pressure is likely caused by the kidney disease. My older cat has kidney issues and detached retina. Is surgery viable?

I'm sorry your cat has a retinal detachment. If the retinas remain detached for more than a day or two, the prognosis is poor for a return of normal vision. Therefore, the key to a successful outcome is rapid diagnosis and early administration of the proper medication to lower blood pressure. Given that you have already started medication, she may have a good prognosis for restoring her sight, but only the vet treating her can say for sure. If you are willing to do the surgery, get it done asap. Best of luck.

Why is my senior cat's eye black and she's having trouble walking?

I am not quite sure. It may be that you are seeing a severely dilated pupil. Some disease can cause hypertension, which if unmanaged for some time, can cause damage to the retina which causes a dilated pupil and blindness. I would recommend that you have Tiger examined by the vet. They can look at the eye and do bloodwork and blood pressure testing to see what is going on. Some of these cases can be reverse, while others the blindness will be permanent.

My cat is blind, wobbly, and has high blood pressure. What to do?

This sounds like she may have retinal detachment which can be a result of uncontrolled high blood pressure. The blindness may be permanent. I would absolutely take her in right away since she has other symptoms also and the sooner she gets treatment the more likely she will be able to recover. My cat is disoriented, losing weight, and suddenly blind. Is she okay?

Disorientation, vision and weight loss can all be signs of severe kidney disease and blood pressure or diabetes and i recommend an urgent check up and blood panel to investigate underlying causes. It is hard to know if her vision was affected to cause her to hit her head, or the other way around?

My senior cat's pupils are suddenly dilated and she can't see.

I would recommend that Monet see a veterinarian. Sudden onset of blindness and dilated pupils can be secondary to high blood pressure in older cats. They can suffer from hyperthyroidism or a heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Both of these geriatric cat problems can cause these changes with her eyes. Why is my old cat bumping into things? Is he losing his sight?

If Socks is bumping into thing he might have lost his sight. I could be due to an eye problem but in old cat that could be cause by an increased blood pressure (sometime secondary to a kidney disease). If possible I would have Socks checked by your veterinarian (physical examination, eye check, blood pressure check and if needed basic bloods and urinary test).
