My cat ate too much ferrous sulfate. Is it toxic? What should I do?

This product is safe, but contains a great deal of other vitamins and minerals that can be excessive. Iron can also be toxic if too much is given, so it's best to ask your vet what the specific dose should be and ask for them to recommend a product. I hope that helps and all is well with Lisa.

Unfortunately, this could be serious. As I'm sure you know, this is an extended release product, and the typical dose is 100mg per cat every 24 hours, so yes, I believe you very well might see toxicity from this, including (on the mild side) excitement, hyperactivity, vomiting, and diarrhea, all the way up to seizures. You have a couple of options: you can call the ASPCA's toxin hotline at (888) 426-4435; they will charge you for the call ($45) but they keep an extensive database on all types of overdoses and will be able to tell you if this is a significant overdose. Your other option is to take Nox to an emergency clinic now to have vomiting induced, and have him treated for the ingestion. They will be able to administer activated charcoal to absorb any residual toxins in the gut as well.

I would call the Pet Poison hotline immediately. +1-855-764-7661 They have 24/7 veterinarians who specialize in toxicities. They also have access to databases of cases that match Sylvester’s. They can tell you whether you need to rush to the emergency vet or to not worry at all. There is a $59 fee but that is much cheaper than an emergency vet visit! Since he is eating, it may be helpful to feed him a high fat meal. See if he will eat a little Ghee or something else really fatty. The fat can help bind the toxin in the blood. You can also make sure he gets plenty of water. You can add rehydration salts (ORS) to his water. If he's not drinking, then you can gently put some in his mouth with a syringe. Don't force it though. You should also try to keep him warm. Ideally, this cat would have and IV drip and be under observation until the toxin was cleared; so try to get him to the vet as soon as you can in the morning.

Oh no, that's not good that Atticus at one of your prenatal vitamins!. A toxic dose of iron is considered to be greater than 20mg/kg. He weighs 4.55kg, so he would need to ingest 91mg of iron to have a toxic reaction. Given that he has eaten only one pill and therefore ingested 27mg. this is not enough to cause toxic symptoms. That being said, it can cause GI upset, and it can take a couple of days for these signs to appear. You may see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and/or anorexia. If you see any of those signs, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. The label you have posted is a little bit fuzzy so I don't know if I am reading it correctly. It looks like it says each tablet has 12mg of iron. If this is the case, assuming your beagle is about 25 pounds, there should probably not be any toxic consequences. Generally speaking, clinical signs do not begin to show until a consumption of approximately 20 mg/kg. In this case, Loki only consumed about 1 mg/kg. If I am not reading the label correctly, this may not be the correct advise. Hope this helps.

It doesn’t say what the medication was. Luckily Rio didn’t eat much of it. I certainly would monitor him closely for the next twelve hours and if you are seeing any behavioral changes, vomiting or diarrhea then please take him right in for treatment. Please only give medications that your veterinarian has prescribed since cats are very sensitive to medications and many are very toxic to cats.
