Why is my cat farting so much after changing to a new cat food?

Extra gas can be caused by a sensitivity or allergy to the diet (most commonly to the protein source), not necessarily to the wet or dry formulation. Consider trying to feed Callie strictly one diet for the next month or two to see if it changes her flatulence. If that does not help, try a different diet for another month or two. It can take at least 6-8 weeks to determine if a diet change has made any impact on Callie. Any time you make a change in diet, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over 5-7 days.

It's possible there could be something underlying such as a food allergy (protein sources can cause allergies in some pets!), or even something such as parasites or an infection causing excess gas. It would be a good idea to bring in a fecal sample to your vet to check for the most common causes of GI upset, and if nothing is found consider a food trial with your vet to rule out any possible food allergies that could be contributing.

It's certainly true that some cats pass gas more than others - just like some humans :) If it bothers you, you can try giving him a daily probiotic supplement like Forti-Flora, or switching to a different food to see if this helps.

Gas is common with diet changes, which take up to several weeks to adjust to. I recommend keeping Slinky's diet stable, limiting treats and human food for at least two weeks to allow her to fully adjust. I also recommend ensuring that Slinky is negative for intestinal parasites by having her stool evaluated for them by a veterinarian. I hope all is well!

Well, this is not terribly uncommon. If you are raising mom and babies correctly, you probably switched Diamond over to kitten food while she is nursing her young. This is often the cause of gaseousness and / or liquefied appearance of feces. With time, some cats more than others, the feces tends to refirm and the amount of gas returns to normal. You can try adding a product like Fortiflora to the food. This encourages healthy and quick probiotic growth in the gut. There is a canine and a feline version so be sure to grab the correct product. Hope this makes sense.

It is very possible the food is causing Mac some GI distress. Other possible causes could include illnesses, infections, parasites etc. A good first step is to bring in a sample of Mac's stool to your vet for an exam and to check for parasites/common GI issues. If he checks out OK, looking to switch him to a different diet or trying out a feeding trial with your vet may help if there is an ingredient he is allergic to. It is best to transition to new food over a period of 7-9 days, gradually adding in more of the new and less of the old, to avoid further GI irritation.

Yes, you are correct that the change in diet can cause Quincey to have this gas. It was an excellent idea to bring him to the vet for a health check, and I'm glad she said everything looked ok. I think it's also an excellent idea to feed him the Royal Canin gastro for the next few days. If that helps with his gas, I would slowly add back in his diet. As for his diet, I'd recommend going back to the Royal Canin. I'm not sure why you would switch foods, but it does seem like the new diet doesn't agree with his stomach, and unless you want to deal with a lot of farts, I'd put him back on a food that doesn't give him gas :-)
