My cat has gas. Should I feed only wet food and no dry food?

The most common cause of flatulence in a pet is dietary intolerance. It looks like the food you chose just doesn't fit well with her intestinal flora! If flatulence is the only change, and it is something you can tolerate, you do not necessarily need to change her food. But most people would decide to try out another food instead of having a stinky cat!

It is very possible the food is causing Mac some GI distress. Other possible causes could include illnesses, infections, parasites etc. A good first step is to bring in a sample of Mac's stool to your vet for an exam and to check for parasites/common GI issues. If he checks out OK, looking to switch him to a different diet or trying out a feeding trial with your vet may help if there is an ingredient he is allergic to. It is best to transition to new food over a period of 7-9 days, gradually adding in more of the new and less of the old, to avoid further GI irritation.

It's possible there could be something underlying such as a food allergy (protein sources can cause allergies in some pets!), or even something such as parasites or an infection causing excess gas. It would be a good idea to bring in a fecal sample to your vet to check for the most common causes of GI upset, and if nothing is found consider a food trial with your vet to rule out any possible food allergies that could be contributing.

Poor Rodney! You may want to try a probiotic mixed into his food once a day, such as Forti-Flora - this often helps with excessive gas. Another option would be to try a different food, as there may be an ingredient in his current diet that doesn't agree with him - there are companies like Natural Balance and Wellness that make limited ingredient diets that may be a better fit for him. If these things don't help, then it would be a good idea to have him checked by a vet to make sure that nothing else is wrong. Your vet may also recommend a prescription GI diet, or a hypoallergenic diet to see if this is more effective.

Hello. Your kitty may be suffering from some type of food allergy. You can switch her to a sensitive stomach type of cat food ( Hill's Science Diet has a good one ), or you can talk to your vet about a Prescription Diet. I would also start using a good probiotic like Forti-Flora. You feed I little packet once a day for a month & see if things improve. Of course, if she is not feeling well, you must consider having her seen by your veterinarian to make sure there is not something seriously wrong with her digestive tract. Gas is common with diet changes, which take up to several weeks to adjust to. I recommend keeping Slinky's diet stable, limiting treats and human food for at least two weeks to allow her to fully adjust. I also recommend ensuring that Slinky is negative for intestinal parasites by having her stool evaluated for them by a veterinarian. I hope all is well!

Typically gas can be caused by the type of food. Every animal handles food differently, so if an animal does well with one food another animal may not do well with that same food. I would recommend sticking with one flavor. You can gradually wean onto a flavor and see if he does well with that. If he doesn't then I would wean onto a different one. If he has diarrhea or soft stools also I would recommend taking Zeus to a veterinarian and let them run a stool sample. They can also dispense medication to help with his stool.
