My blue-eyed cat's eyes move back and forth. Is this normal?

This is called nystagmus. Some Asian breeds of cats have a congenital nystagmus, which is not concerning. They can still see very well and act and feel normal and healthy. However, nystagmus can also be a sign of a brain lesion. Should your kitty act funny, or not feel good, have problems walking, eating, drinking or appear ill, take her to your vet for an exam and mention the nystagmus. But if she acts normal, then there is likely no problem.

Jos's eyes do not appear normal. The cornea appears opaque and I suspect there is abnormality present. This may or may not be congenital and it may or may not require treatment and I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

What you are seeing in the inside corner of Nala's eye is a normal structure called the third eyelid (or nictating membrane). However, it is not normally up as much as Nala's are in the picture. There are a few possibilities of why a third eyelid will be up more than normal. Some drugs will make them go up more, tapeworms (https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442) can sometimes make them go up in cats, and any irritation of the eye can make them go up. Since it appears to be getting worse, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her to see if they can find a cause. It is common for kittens to undergo an eye color change. If your cat is an older cat though, it may signify infection or more serious underlying disease. Any sudden change in eye color should be addressed by your vet or veterinary ophthalmologist.

Albinism has been reported in cats, and there are a few different types. Complete albinism would result in red irises with no pigment and has been reported in domestic shorthair cats. It's a little tough to see the irises in your picture, and another possibility would be that this cat has pigmented (blue or yellow) irises but dilated pupils and no pigment at the back of the eye, which cases a red 'flash' rather than the typical green 'flash'. Luckily I don't believe true albinism has been linked to other genetic problems. The dominant white coat gene that also typically results in blue eyes has also been linked to deafness.

Cats often squint their eyes, especially if they are getting sleepy and about to nap. Now if you notice any redness of the white part of her eye, eye discharge (usually yellow green) or puffiness of her eyes, then I would get concerned about conjunctivitis and then eye drops would have to be prescribed by your vet. This is common in cats. They often will squint one eye. As long as she downstairs have any discharge (yellow or green), swelling or continued excessive blinking (blepharospams) then she is likely displaying normal cat behavior.
