Why does my white kitten have red, unfocused eyes? Is it albino?

Albino kittens should grow up just the same as other kittens, however some can be more sensitive to light or have minor vision problems, and lighter fur may be more prone to irritation or sunburn compared to darker coated cats. As long as the kitten is continuing to thrive and act normal with the other kittens it should be fine, however if you're noting any signs of illness or it is failing to thrive, seeking vet care is always best.

This sounds like your kitty may have what is called a congenital nystagmus (fast or slow movement of the eyes back and forth). This is commonly seen in Himalayan, Siamese, albino, and white haired cats. Typically this condition is not suggestive of any serious neurological abnormalities with the blue iris pets that have non-pigmented retinas (seen only on ophthalmic exam with vet). This condition most likely has been present since your kitty was born, but it was not as intense and therefore could have gone unnoticed. I would recommend that you have a vet to look at the eyes during a regular exam just to double check our suspicions and also to ensure the non-pigmented retina is there. This condition also does not tend to affect your cats vision or quality of life.

I am sorry that we weren't able to get to your question sooner. That is an interesting behavior. It is nice of her to take the white one into the shade, it would be unexpected for her to instinctively know that her skin is more prone to damage from the sun. What you are seeing in the inside corner of Nala's eye is a normal structure called the third eyelid (or nictating membrane). However, it is not normally up as much as Nala's are in the picture. There are a few possibilities of why a third eyelid will be up more than normal. Some drugs will make them go up more, tapeworms (https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442) can sometimes make them go up in cats, and any irritation of the eye can make them go up. Since it appears to be getting worse, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her to see if they can find a cause. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly the picture you attached doesn't show Ghost's eyes on my end. It has most of his head cut off. I can only guess that maybe he had uveitis before you got him and is suffering from anterior synechiae, which are fibrin strands that prevent the pupil from changing. It definitely could be genetic. As for a long term prognosis I can't be sure with out a picture. Synechiae can lead to glaucoma potentially which can affect vision. Deafness in white cats can occur with any eye color but is more prevalent in white cats with blue eyes. It is a very high percent chance that white cats will be deaf (70%). If they are deaf they may not be able to hear cars or predators which may cause their lives to be shorter. White outdoor cats are also more sensitive to the sun like pale skinned people are are at a higher risk to develop skin cancer. If you can not keep the abnormal kitten indoors then try to place it in a new home that can keep it indoors. It is not wrong to find other homes for all the kittens. If you can not find the abnormal kitten a new home then do the best that you can. If it can not run away from predators it will be at a higher risk. It is normal for 2 week old kittens to not be able to walk normally. They will get stronger and more coordinated in the next week or 2. I wish you the best!

Yes, those pictures appear normal to me! It's common for white kitties' ear canals to have a bluish tint, and if he's always looked that way and is acting normal and playful then I'm not worried! Additionally, if he is drinking kitten milk he may be meeting his fluid requirements and may not need to drink water - so I am not worried about that either as long as he's eating and playful. I would add, though, that at 9 weeks he shouldn't need kitten milk so I'd recommend you discontinue that and just offer kitten food and water. Hope that helps!
