My cat had an eye removed. Why is the empty socket swelling now?

It appears that your kitty has a so-called cat bite abscess. You should take her temperature and if she has a temperature of over 103F she will need to be seen by your vet and the abscess needs to be drained properly. She will also need antibiotics, If she does not have a fever, the abscess is draining nicely (you can put gentle pressure on it and remove the discharge with a tissue) and does not refill, then it might heal by itself. However since this abscess is close to the eye I strongly recommend you taking Calypso to your vet tomorrow for an exam and treatment.

I'm sorry Kouty had to have his eye enucleated! My own cat needed his eye enucleated recently, and I have to say that one eyed cats are very handsome! While you can see some bleeding after surgery, it shouldn't continue for days after surgery. Blood tinged discharge is normal, but active bleeding is not. I think you did the right thing by leaving him in the clinic for observation, but the bleeding should be stopped when you get him tomorrow. My own cat didn't have active bleeding after his surgery, he had some mild bloody discharge that stopped pretty quickly. If you see him still actively bleeding tomorrow, I would be concerned and have the vet check him out. My cat didn't have a patch on his eye, but he did have an Ecollar on to keep him from scratching at his eye while the area healed. I would recommend having one of those for him. It appears as though his third eyelid may be elevated and possibly damaged. The veterinarian will determine if medication such as antibiotics are warranted. If there is eye disease, such as a corneal ulcer or scratch across the eye, this will require specific treatment. Surgery is possible if there is an infection under the skin such as an abscess. If he is not as active, this is likely because he does not feel well. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to cats. Hello. When an eye is removed, all of the supporting structures should be removed as well, including any and all tear-producing glands. If there is some sort of fluid accumulating, perhaps there was some glandular tissue left behind or some type of infection. It is also important to make sure there is no issue with an abscessed upper tooth. Your poor kitty! That looks very painful. Your kitty needs to see a vet soon for this problem. Cat scratches to the eye can be very serious. All that is visible in the photo appears to be inflammed conjunctival tissue. This may be the primary problem or more likely something is going with the eye or structures associated with the eye/orbit. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snowball. He may have a skin infection affecting the skin surrounding his eye. This can happen as the primary problem such as the result of an allergy. It could also be the result of self trauma. If he is continually paw at the eye, then can cause damage. If his eye hurts or itches, he will want to paw at it. His veterinarian will examine him and may recommend some eye tests. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him to prevent her from pawing if he has been doing so. I hope this information helps!

I would say it’s not unreasonable for 4 days post-op but the swelling should be going down rapidly at this point. If it’s not improved by tomorrow, I’d pop in to see the vet who did the surgery to make sure there is not a complication such as seroma or hematoma (fluids or blood pocket). In the mean time, I recommend warm packing for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times daily. To do this, soak a wash cloth in warm water, wring it out, and put it in a plastic bag. Apply gently to the surgery site.
