Why is my cat's eye closed after coming in from outside?

I would suspect that he may have gotten into a fight with another animal outdoors, or he could have injured his eye. He can't keep his eye open because the eye is painful to light. He has to see a vet immediately. Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Hello. It is possible that Snowey is reacting to something that was used in the eyes. Closed eyes are an indication the eyes really are bothering him. If you have an emergency clinic nearby it would be a good idea to have Snowey evaluated to make sure he is not developing any potential problems with the eyes. Hello. This could be any number of things such as a flare up of a herpes virus very common in cats, or he has as infection, possibly from a small scratch on his cornea, or even a bit on conjunctivitis. Wil should see his veterinarian to make sure there is nothing more serious with the eye, & usually, with the proper treatments & medications, eyes clear up very nicely. I'm so sorry that Myrtle has been injured. Injuries to the cornea (the clear outer portion of the eye) are very painful, so that is likely why Myrtle is keeping her eye closed. Hopefully Myrtle just has a small scratch that will heal well, but I would strongly recommend having it evaluated ASAP to get her on antibiotics if there is a scratch. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, allergies, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Given that this seems more associated with when he has been outside, allergies seems likely. Another possibility is an upper respiratory infection. This could be due to a scratch on the eye and/or an infection. The possible infection can be on the outside, or inside of the eye. There are also some eyelid disorders that can cause damage to the eye. Without seeing it, I can't narrow it down more than this. However, the cloudy discharge is concerning enough that it's best to take Shasta to a vet within the next 24 hours. Infections and other problems can quickly cause irreversible damage to the eye, so it's best to have it diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section) to help clean and soothe it.
