Why is my cat's eye abnormal if he's acting completely normal?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He seems to have an opacity in his eye. This can be on the cornea (surface of his eye) or on the lens. He could have a scratch across his eye or even a scar. If the problem is on his lens, then a cataract is a possibility. His veterinarian will examine his eye with a special instrument called an ophthalmic scope. Some tests may be recommended as well. I hope this information helps!

This could be due either to a corneal ulcer or an early stage corneal sequestrum. Other differentials would include superficial keratitis. The eye must be assessed by your local veterinarian as soon as possible.

In the photos you've posted, the eye appears within normal limits. I can make out the iris, pupil, sclera, and conjunctiva at least partially in some or all of the pictures. The only way to assess the eye functionally is in person with the presence of ophthalmic tools. However, I see no reason to recommend any further diagnostics unless you suspect Memo is having problems with eyesight or is having other ophthalmic issues. Hope this makes sense.

Considering the pics you uploaded, I can say there is a deep and severe corneal ulcer with a possible penetrating injury. An immediate check up is required to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotic eye drops are certainly needed but a surgical intervention may be required.

I'm sorry but it is very difficult to assess eye problems with regular photos. The use of an ophthalmoscope, slit lamp, etc to look into the eye is best. It sounds like that has been done and an ophthalmologist exam would be best. All I think I see in this photo is a dark area above the pupil that would worry me about iris melanoma but again, I can't really tell much from a photo. There are too many possibilities as to what could be going on. An ophthalmologist will be able to help better as this is their area of expertise. This eye looks like it is ruptured. This is a constant source of pain and infection, and this cat will likely succumb to these things and not live a normal happy life. Infection could also lead to sepsis, so I highly recommend helping this stray kitty and getting this eye looked at. If the eye is too far gone, then removal of the eye (enucleation) may be the best course of action to help this poor kitty. Best of luck in caring for this street cat moving forward. Take care.

A blurry spot can mean that you pet either has a scar on the cornea or it could indicate a corneal ulcer, depending on how this looks. There is also the potential it could be nuclear sclerosis, if it is a deeper opacity that you are seeing. Please submit a photo of the eye in question for clarification on what this likely is, or have your vet do a physical exam to confirm. If it is a corneal ulcer, it needs to be confirmed with an eye test through your veterinarian and then treated with medication. Corneal ulcers however cause excessive blinking and eye discharge. Nuclear sclerosis is common in older cats, and I'm not sure how old your cat is, but they don't require any treatment.. And corneal scars are basically scarring from a previous corneal injury, which typically are permanent and don't require treatment. I wish you the best moving forward with your fur baby. Take care.
