Why does my cat's eye look unusual in pictures? Is it serious?

It looks like Memo could have changes to the iris due to anterior uveitis or inflammation in the eye. This can cause the pupil to become smaller and the iris to change colors. It’s also possible that Memo has a growth on this eye. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can examine Memo’s eye in person. They may want to check his eye pressure.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He seems to have an opacity in his eye. This can be on the cornea (surface of his eye) or on the lens. He could have a scratch across his eye or even a scar. If the problem is on his lens, then a cataract is a possibility. His veterinarian will examine his eye with a special instrument called an ophthalmic scope. Some tests may be recommended as well. I hope this information helps!

Hi ! It looks like corneal sequestrum. It is difficult to tell for sure from just looking at the eye from a picture but that’s what it could be. If you haven’t already,please go and see a vet ophthalmologist.

Hi there and thank you for posting this picture. The whites of the eyes, or sclera, look to me like some normal age related pigmentation changes. I am not overly concerned by what I see in the picture. However, pictures are never as good as hands on examination. I would encourage you to have Vriska examined by your veterinarian. I'm sorry but it is very difficult to assess eye problems with regular photos. The use of an ophthalmoscope, slit lamp, etc to look into the eye is best. It sounds like that has been done and an ophthalmologist exam would be best. All I think I see in this photo is a dark area above the pupil that would worry me about iris melanoma but again, I can't really tell much from a photo. There are too many possibilities as to what could be going on. An ophthalmologist will be able to help better as this is their area of expertise. I see what you are seeing from the pictures. The pupil is just an opening in the iris (colored part) and what sits inside the eye (behind the pupil, what you see though the pupil) are the lens and the contents of the back of the eye (fundus including retina, etc.). A cloudiness to the eye can occur due to inflammation (uveitis), lens related changes (nuclear sclerosis or cataracts), or sometimes due to cellular infiltrate in the eye. It is good that there are no vision changes and that the eye is comfortable. A cause for this haze should be able to be readily identified by an eye exam by your vet. Based on the picture I suspect it may be a persistent pupillary membrane. This is a birth defect, but does not cause any problems. However, pictures can be deceiving and I would highly encourage you to have it looked at in person by a veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
