My cat is drooling and foaming after medicine. Is it normal?

Foaming at the mouth in a cat after medication is typically a sign that the medication was either bitter tasting to them or it just wasn't pleasant. You can try the medicaiton again, giving it slowly this time and see what response Kitty has. If he foams again, then you can ask your vet if there is another flavor that you can get this medicaiton in, that is more tolerable for Kitty. Best wishes and take care.

It sounds like she either has fleas or she has something on her coat (like a foreign substance) that she is licking off. Cats often foam/drool when they taste something they don't like. I suggest you bathe her (if she will let you) and start her on a good flea prevention to cover all the bases.

This does appear to be a normal reaction to oral medication. Cats really do not like the taste of the medication and tend to drool and hold their mouth open. If this was to happen 20 minutes, or more after you gave the medication, then I'd be concerned that it is an adverse reaction to the medication. In that case, it would be best to contact your veterinarian. If the medication appears to be stressing her out so much that she is having labored breathing, then it may be worthwhile to change the way it is delivered. Your veterinarian can advise more about this. It would be good to take a video of what you are seeing after giving the medication. Cats are very sensitive to the taste of medicine. If it is bitter, the cat will foam and froth at the mouth in an attempt to clear the bad taste. It is never recommended to medicate your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Many over the counter medications can be toxic to cats. Ideally, Black Bean should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying causes. Blood work and xrays may be indicated after a physical exam. Supportive care (IV or subcutaneous fluids, anti emetics, etc) may be needed until a diagnosis is reached.

Poor Pye! Thank you for following up to state that he got some miconazole in his nose and mouth. This medication is only prescribed for topical use, and seems to only have minimal absorption if some is accidentally ingested. However, it can cause some stomach upset or even liver problems if enough is ingested. It's likely that Pye is foaming at the mouth because it tastes pretty terrible. I'm glad to hear that you've rinsed out his mouth! However, since I don't know how much he ingested, I'd recommend calling either the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) or the ASPCA Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) to discuss this problem with one of their veterinary toxicologists. Odds are good that this shouldn't cause any problems for Pye, but it's best to confirm with them the risk of causing liver problems based on how much of the miconazole that got into his mouth. While I think it is probably a reaction to the medication I don't necessarily think that it is a 'bad' reaction. Some cats react to the flavor of antibiotics or become stressed when the medication is administered which leads to drooling. This antibiotic could also cause nausea, but if Dusky isn't vomiting the drooling probably isn't related to nausea. You could try giving the antibiotic right after a meal to hopefully minimize any chance of nausea.

Hello. Foaming is not unusual when cats taste something they really do not like, but most likely most of the medication did go down. The problem is how much is Sweetie going to fight you at the next dose, & then the next one after that. I still prefer pills, as depending on the size, most are pretty tiny, or tablets can be formulated into tasty treats. I have also found that a lot of cats really love the taste of an product called Churu, by INABA. It is a lickable treat that makes it super simple to hide a small pill in it. For now, you can refrigerate the prednisolone you do have because making it cold often helps to disguise the nasty flavor some. Hope this all helps.
