My cat is drooling and foaming when grooming her fur. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Since yesteday my cat seems to have some trouble grooming herself. I've noticed that everytime she licks her fur, especially the upper body part, she'd start shaking her head, smacking her lips, and then her mouth would start foaming/drooling. What's going on? I don't see any dirt on her body nor do I smell something funny. What can I do to help her?

It sounds like she either has fleas or she has something on her coat (like a foreign substance) that she is licking off. Cats often foam/drool when they taste something they don't like. I suggest you bathe her (if she will let you) and start her on a good flea prevention to cover all the bases.
