Why is my cat drooling, clicking teeth, and has tongue ulcers?

Ulcer in the mouth can be caused by various reasons in cats, calici virus would be one of the most common reasons, in some cases an antibiotic course can help, in others only teeth extraction will solve the problem. please take your cat to the vet ASAP to get him treated.

Calicivirus infection can cause this kind of signs and not respond to steroids. A sample obtained by a swab from the lesions can easily identify that. If negative a sample from the lesions (biopsies) is needed. Antibiotics may be needed. I would recommend to discuss these options with your veterinarian.

I would be most suspicious of a calicivirus infection causing these signs. Calicivirus is a vaccine preventable disease that is mostly seen with kittens. This virus will cause ulcers in the mouth, which will cause it to bleed a little. This disease is often self-limiting, but can cause severe ulcers in certain cases, so it will definitely be good for the vet to check them in the next day or two. I would agree with your veterinarian in that they probably need to sedate or put under anesthesia to be able to better evaluate this region. Then they can treat it accordingly. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the picture in your description I would not think this is feline calicivirus. Feline calicivirus is mainly manifested as upper respiratory symptoms. I would think that this is an ulceration due to a complex disease associated with the immune system. Cats can develop ulcers on the lips due to a disease called eosinophilic granuloma complex. Many times these ulcers in the lips are due to an allergic response. If you are using plastic bowls to feed from I would switch to ceramic or metal to help prevent this. If you are already using ceramic or metal bowls then this may have been any different allergy trigger from the environment. Many times treatment with a steroid will help resolve this and sometimes this will only pop up once during the year or several times. If this is not getting any better or it is worsening I would suggest having your veterinarian take a look at this to recommend the most appropriate treatment. The symptoms you have described could have many causes, including periodontal disease, stomatitis caused by an autoimmune disease or a virus such as FIV, a tumor in the mouth, a nasopharyngeal polyp, trauma to the inside of the mouth, or ulcers in the mouth secondary to kidney failure. Most of these are incredibly painful, and it is important to diagnose the cause so that the most appropriate treatment can be selected.
